We are looking for a strategic and experienced Payroll Director that is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and jumping in to get the work done. This leader will oversee the payroll function and drive its alignment with organizational goals. This role involves managing high-level payroll strategy, ensuring compliance, and overseeing retirement benefits, including 401(k) and deferred compensation plans.


Martignetti Companies has a payroll of approximately 1,700 employees across New England, with both a weekly and bi-weekly payroll. We have a mix of pay types, including exempt and nonexempt employees, union and non-union, and seasonal/temporary. A portion of our team are commission-based and/or incentive-based pay plans. The qualified candidate would have experience of working with a similarly complex payroll.


Key Accountabilities:


•Develop and implement payroll strategies that align with organizational goals and ensure efficiency

•Oversee all aspects of payroll processing to ensure accuracy, compliance, and timeliness

•Manage performance-based compensation and all retirement benefit programs, including 401(k) plans and deferred compensation, ensuring accurate contributions and compliance with regulations

•Lead initiatives to improve payroll processes and systems, leveraging technology for efficiency and scalability

•Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll and benefits regulations

•Partner with HR, Finance, and other departments to align payroll operations with broader organizational strategies

•Provide guidance and mentorship to the payroll team, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement

•Monitor and analyze payroll metrics to inform decision-making and identify areas for improvement

•Address escalated payroll and benefits issues, providing resolution and guidance to the team

•Prepare and present payroll and benefits reports to senior management, ensuring transparency and accountability



Requirements:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:


•Extensive experience in payroll management, including strategic planning and operational execution

•Strong knowledge of retirement benefits administration, including 401(k) and deferred compensation plans

•Expertise in payroll systems and software (e.g., Paychex, Paylocity) and familiarity with integrating payroll with other systems

•Comprehensive understanding of payroll laws, regulations, tax compliance, unemployment laws, and compliance requirements

•Demonstrated leadership and team management skills

•Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities

•Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly

•Ability to interface and effectively communicate with all levels of employees including leadership

•Excellent computer skills, especially Microsoft Excel and payroll/time & labor systems


Education/Experience/Training:


•A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field is preferred. Associate degree with work in payroll will be taken into consideration

•7-10 years’ experience leading and managing a payroll department

•Minimum of 10-12 years of Payroll required

•Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification preferred

•Experience with Paylocity Payroll Software a major plus

•Experience in accounting, payroll budget development and management
