Job Description

The Dispatcher is responsible for executing deliveries to customers in a cost-effective manner while achieving customer satisfaction. Duties and responsibilities include:

Safety and Compliance:

Ensure compliance to DOT regulations (hours of service, driver logs, inspections, HazMat requirements, etc.) and company policies and procedures. Track and ensure driver credentials are current (driver file).

Schedule and perform routine driver safety audits (Driving and Delivery Evaluations).

Monitor driver performance and delivery efficiency, continuously track performance and provide coaching and discipline as necessary. Participate in performance assessment of drivers.

Logistics and Routing:

Create and place purchase orders to vendors for product pick up, obtain pick up numbers from vendors and coordinate product pick up at vendor/terminal locations.

Create shipping documents and review driver paperwork after routes are completed for accuracy and completeness.

Assign routes to company drivers, track delivery status and efficiency, and resolve delivery issues through effective collaboration with customers, suppliers/terminals and Northstar employees (customer service, sales account managers and operations employees).

Assign deliveries to contract carriers, create shipping documents and review and approve freight invoices. Assist in periodic evaluations of contract carriers and vendors/terminals.

Maintain the freight cost model and the electronic log system. Manage access to the fuel card account.

Identify and communicate tasks and priorities to yard employees to ensure customer satisfaction and on time delivery.

Coverage and Capacity Planning:

Perform administrative tasks such as receive orders by phone or e-mail, order entry, purchase orders and receiving, invoicing, batch tickets and batch receipts as necessary for coverage (employee absence) or to assist in completing transactions in a timely manner.

Manage coverage for driver time off.

Assist in recruiting, hiring and orientation of new drivers. Perform capacity planning for manpower and equipment to enable growth and coverage when resources are limited.

Perform other job-related duties as assigned. Occasional extended work hours may be necessary based on business needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· Minimum of 3 years experience in customer order execution including route assignment for company drivers and assigning orders to contract carriers.

· Experience in creating routes with multiple deliveries for company drivers, and interfacing with drivers proactively during the route to ensure delivery performance and customer satisfaction.

· Proven track record of improving delivery efficiency through data analysis, modeling and tools.

· Excellent communication skills, written and verbal. Ability to resolve conflicts in a professional manner.

· Computer skills including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Experience using an enterprise business system and performing transactions (order entry, purchase orders, invoicing, customer account setup/maintenance, etc).

· Working knowledge of DOT regulations and experience using an electronic driver logs system.

· Work experience in chemical manufacturing or chemical distribution is a plus.

  • Extensive computer and telephone use.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, may be exposed to a shop environment with air tools, will be around running tractors.
  • This position requires the ability to occasionally answer phone calls after normal business hours, weekends and holidays as business needs arise. These situations arise when there is a delivery issue or an emergency delivery request by a customer.
