Piping Designer Job Description

Location: Denver, CO, United States

Primary Objective

  • The Piping Designer will contribute to engineering design tasks related to measurement, compression, automation, and pipeline projects, supporting a range of design, project, and documentation activities.

Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Assist with internal and external engineering design support for various initiatives.

  • Manage and update drawing databases to align with organizational standards.

  • Create 2D and 3D models and drawings for disciplines such as Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Civil, Structural, and other CAD/CAM design-related tasks.

  • Work with the latest AutoCAD software versions.

  • Perform quality assurance checks on drawings, drawing sets, and material lists to ensure adherence to organizational standards.

  • Collaborate with clients, engineering firms, and internal teams to uphold and verify compliance with design and drafting standards.

  • Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) and material lists for project drawings.

  • Produce as-built drawings based on field markups.

  • Establish, document, and implement best practices for xref/attachment and NCS layer standards.

  • Develop preliminary sketches or schematics to translate engineering ideas into visual representations.

  • Participate in P&ID reviews, design evaluations, site visits, and project progress meetings.

  • Design layouts using organizational specifications, standard drawings, design guidelines, plot plans, flow diagrams, line lists, and supplier data.

  • Engage with diverse stakeholders professionally, maintaining tact and courtesy.

  • Communicate effectively in person and over the phone, demonstrating strong verbal skills and active listening.

  • Ensure consistent attendance and maintain a high level of performance.

  • Prioritize personal safety, as well as the safety of organizational assets, colleagues, and the public.

Qualifications

Experience and Specialized Knowledge

  • At least ten (10) years of direct experience in piping design.

  • Minimum of eight (8) years working on Oil and Gas facility design projects.

  • Intermediate to advanced skills in CADWorx and AutoCAD.

  • Familiarity with industry standards, including B31.4, B31.8, and B31.3.

  • Proficiency with Navisworks.

  • Experience using Autodesk Vault Professional or similar document management tools.

  • Knowledge of material nomenclature, specifications, and symbols for P&IDs, Piping, Structural, and Electrical components.

  • Proficiency with raster editing tools.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Valid driver’s license and a driving record acceptable for travel purposes.

Skills, Competencies, and Abilities

  • Keen attention to detail when creating, reviewing, and distributing drawing packages and material lists.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines.

  • Strong organizational skills to manage daily priorities.

  • Capability to work on projects that are not fully defined.

  • Ability to collaborate within a team, follow management directives, adhere to schedules, maintain focus on details, and comply with organizational protocols.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, drive, talk, see (with specific vision abilities including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment), hear, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, reach, kneel, push, pull, and lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Work in general office conditions with minimal safety hazards.

  • Prolonged sitting may be required.

  • Frequent use of hands for typing, handling, or feeling; regular talking and hearing.

  • Occasional standing, reaching, walking, climbing, or balancing.

  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs regularly and up to 25 lbs occasionally.

Working Conditions

  • Occasional travel, including field visits to verify drawings.

  • Availability to work non-standard hours as needed.

  • Must carry a cell phone and be responsive during both working and non-working hours.

  • Successful candidates must pass a drug screen and background check, including credit checks for certain roles, prior to employment.
