SUMMARY OF POSITION

A Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting (drawing) blood samples from patients for testing. After safely drawing the sample, the Phlebotomist will ensure the samples are accurately labeled, stored correctly and tested per the order.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Preparing patients before drawing blood.
  • Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process.
  • Following all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas including infectious control, sterilization of equipment and disposing of sharps.
  • Gathering medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes.
  • Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly.
  • Accurately updating patient information in the organization’s database.
  • Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws.
  • Successfully drawing blood from patients with minimal or no complications.
  • Working with supervising Providers and Medical Assistants and following strict safety protocols to support patient care.
  • Performing CLIA-waved testing.
  • Supporting Medical Assistants in ensuring Quality Controls are performed and logs are completed.
  • Following established company policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations, in all aspects of the role.
  • Adhering to HIPAA regulations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Professional certification in phlebotomy from a recognized program.
  • Strong communication, empathy and interpersonal skills for working with patients.
  • Detail-oriented and committed to ensuring patient confidentiality
  • Excellent motor skills and the ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
  • Data entry skills.
  • Previous experience with an HER/EMR.
  • Expertise in use of personal computers, Microsoft Office and database and reporting technical skills.

  8. Exhibit experience and working knowledge of local community resources.
  9. Hold current driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  10. Travel to all parts of the facility and throughout the community.

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience.

  • Must have manual dexterity and experience to perform handwritten paperwork, recordkeeping, and filing.
  • Prolonged sitting, standing, or walking may be required.
  • Frequent bending/stooping, squatting, reaching above the shoulders, twisting and turning, kneeling, and pushing/pulling may be required.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful clearance from Criminal, Kansas and Missouri Child/Elder Abuse and Neglect, Sex Offender background investigations, TB testing, pre-employment drug testing, and verification of Hepatitis-B, flu and COVID-19 immunizations.
  • Occasional evening and weekend availability is required.
