Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Commercial Real Estate Controller to lead the accounting and financial reporting functions across our investment portfolio and development/construction operations. This role will oversee all aspects of property-level and corporate accounting, ensure accurate and timely financial reporting, manage construction and development accounting processes, and support strategic decision-making. The ideal candidate brings strong commercial real estate expertise, experience managing complex portfolios, and hands-on knowledge of both stabilized assets and ground-up development projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all accounting operations for the commercial real estate investment portfolio and development/construction projects
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting processes
- Ensure accurate property-level reporting, consolidations, and corporate financial statements
- Supervise general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, cash management, and bank reconciliations
- Oversee construction accounting, including job cost tracking, draw schedules, lien waivers, retainage, and capitalization
- Manage development budgets, forecasting, and variance analysis
- Coordinate with asset management, development, and property management teams
- Lead annual audits and tax return coordination with external auditors and tax advisors
- Establish and maintain internal controls and accounting policies
- Oversee lender reporting and compliance requirements
- Manage and mentor accounting staff
- Implement and optimize accounting systems and processes
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance (CPA a plus)
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience in commercial real estate
- Significant experience overseeing both stabilized investment portfolios and development/construction accounting
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting standards
- Experience managing audits and lender reporting
- Proficiency in real estate accounting systems (Yardi 7 experience strongly preferred)
- Foundation Construction accounting software experience is a plus
- Advanced Excel skills
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
