About the Role

Burton James is seeking a talented and detail-driven Lead Cutter to oversee all fabric cutting operations. This role requires expert knowledge of upholstery fabrics, leathers, and trims, along with precision in pattern placement and yardage calculations. The Lead Cutter plays a pivotal role in meeting customer specifications for our custom furniture, collaborating closely with the sewing, upholstery, and cushion teams to ensure a seamless workflow and uphold the highest quality standards.This individual embraces and supports our in-person/on-site work culture and embodies our company values of Ownership, Collaboration and Respect.

What you can do for us:

· Lead and oversee daily fabric cutting operations, assigning work based on production priorities and team members’ skills.

· Interpret work orders, shop drawings, and fabric specifications to ensure accurate cuts and placement.

· Accurately calculate yardage requirements, including considerations for repeats, patterns, nap direction, and bias cuts.

· Lay out and cut fabric to minimize waste while ensuring precise alignment of patterns and weaves.

· Inspect all fabric for flaws prior to cutting, marking and reporting any issues or concerns.

· Manage and train team members in proper cutting techniques, pattern creation, quality standards, and safe equipment use.

· Collaborate with upholstery, sewing, and cushion teams to ensure all materials are ready when needed and meet specifications.

· Maintain cutting tools and work areas to ensure accuracy, efficiency, and safety.

· Assist with keeping accurate inventory of fabric on hand.

Qualifications:

· 5+ years of experience in fabric cutting, ideally within high-end or custom furniture production; 8–10+ years strongly preferred.

· Advanced knowledge of all upholstery fabric types, including woven, velvet, leather, and specialty textiles.

· Proven expertise in pattern placement and yardage calculations for complex and custom designs.

· Strong attention to detail with a consistent commitment to maintaining the highest quality standards.

· Ability to read and interpret work orders, shop drawings, and technical specifications with accuracy.

· Skilled in the safe and efficient use of cutting tools, including straight knives, rotary cutters, and other industry-standard equipment.

· Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to train, motivate, and support other team members.

· Punctual and reliable, with the ability to provide advance notice of late arrivals or absences.

· Maintains a clean, organized workstation; cares for tools and equipment to ensure longevity; and follows all safety protocols, including the proper use of PPE.

· Strong communication skills; bilingual in Spanish and English highly preferred.

· Photo samples of previous work strongly encouraged.

· The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with the assistance of team members. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

· Ability to work in open environment with fluctuating temperatures and standard lighting.

Compensation

Starting base pay: $24.00 - $26.00+ per hour. Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
