Project Accountant

Job Overview:
A growing and dynamic construction company is seeking a detail-oriented Project Accountant to support financial oversight and reporting for multiple ongoing projects. This role plays a critical part in managing job cost tracking, revenue recognition, and accurate project forecasting in collaboration with project managers and finance leadership.
The ideal candidate brings strong experience in job costing, WIP schedules, and project-based accounting, with the ability to work independently and communicate effectively across departments. Key Responsibilities:
Project Financial Management:
- Maintain and monitor job cost activity across multiple projects, ensuring accuracy in cost coding, labor, materials, and subcontractor expenses.
- Prepare monthly WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules and contribute to revenue recognition in accordance with contract terms and percentage-of-completion methods.
- Review and reconcile project budgets vs. actuals, and work closely with project managers to analyze financial performance and forecast outcomes.
Billing & Contract Support:
- Manage project billing cycles, including AIA billing, cost-plus invoicing, and schedule of values updates.
- Assist with contract review and documentation to ensure financial terms are reflected accurately in billing and reporting.
- Track and report on change orders, committed costs, and other financial impacts related to project scope changes.
Reporting & Compliance:
- Prepare and distribute monthly project financial reports to leadership and project stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting standards, and job cost procedures.
- Support financial audits and assist in gathering project-related documentation as needed.
Collaboration & Process Improvement:
- Partner with project managers, operations teams, and accounting staff to ensure alignment between field activity and financial records.
- Assist in process improvement initiatives around job cost tracking, reporting tools, and budget management.
- Serve as a resource for project teams regarding accounting practices, job costing questions, and financial system usage.
Qualifications:
Experience:
- 3+ years of experience in project accounting, ideally within the construction or engineering industry.
- Proven experience with WIP reporting, job costing, and project-based financial analysis (required).
- Familiarity with GAAP and construction accounting best practices (preferred).
