About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and inspiring Controller to join our leadership team in Madison, WI. This role is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including accounting practices, fiscal records, compliance controls, financial reporting, and payroll. You will also play a critical leadership role in driving process improvements, mentoring staff, and supporting strategic business initiatives.
This is a hybrid role offering flexibility, autonomy, and the chance to directly impact company performance and culture.
Key Responsibilities

Oversee financial reporting and all accounting operations with a strong focus on internal controls

Manage month-end close process and prepare accurate financial statements

Lead external audits and tax return preparation in coordination with public accounting firms

Analyze and report monthly budget vs. actual performance, including commentary on variances

Oversee fixed asset accounting and depreciation schedules

Drive continuous process improvements within the finance team and across departments

Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, providing data-driven recommendations to management

Serve as a strategic resource and business partner across the organization

Recruit, coach, mentor, and develop high-performing accounting and finance staff

Set clear expectations and motivate the team to align with company growth initiatives
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (required)

CPA designation strongly preferred

7+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including 3+ years in a management role

Background in public accounting with audit experience is a plus

Experience with process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) is preferred

Strong knowledge of ERP or automated accounting systems

Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

A passion for mentoring and developing teams
