Position Overview
The Medical Director provides strategic clinical and organizational leadership for Paragon Behavioral Health Connections, a 3-year-old community mental health center serving children, adolescents, and adults across Colorado. Our clients often present with high acuity, co-occurring disorders, and significant social determinants of health barriers.
This role is central to building organizational capacity and infrastructure, developing and implementing best practices, and ensuring high-quality, evidence-based psychiatric care. The Medical Director will oversee prescribers, support risk management processes, and may maintain a small caseload (up to 5 hours/week) to remain clinically engaged.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Infrastructure Development
- Lead the design and implementation of clinical and operational structures to support a growing mental health center.
- Establish sustainable systems, policies, and workflows to meet the needs of complex, high-acuity populations.
- Partner with executive leadership to align medical services with organizational goals, funding requirements, and community needs.
Clinical Oversight & Governance
- Provide supervision, mentorship, and oversight for psychiatrists, PMHNPs, and prescribing providers.
- Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and standards of care to ensure compliance with state, federal, and accreditation requirements.
- Conduct case consultations for complex patients and review treatment plans for clinical appropriateness.
Risk Management & Quality Improvement
- Identify clinical and organizational risks and establish proactive mitigation strategies.
- Lead quality improvement initiatives, including use of data, performance metrics, and feedback to improve care and outcomes.
- Ensure safe, ethical, and patient-centered prescribing practices.
Leadership & Capacity Building
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation across the medical team.
- Recruit, mentor, and support prescribers and clinical leaders to expand organizational capacity.
- Serve as a thought leader in evidence-based care models for co-occurring and high-acuity populations.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate behavioral health, medical, and social determinant supports.
- Partner with community organizations, professional associations, and regulatory bodies to strengthen services and address care disparities.
Qualifications
Required
- MD/DO with active Colorado medical license and Board Certification in Psychiatry (ABPN).
- DEA registration for prescribing controlled substances.
- Minimum 5 years of psychiatric clinical experience, with demonstrated ability to work across child, adolescent, and adult populations.
- 25 years of supervisory/leadership experience overseeing prescribers or medical teams.
- Familiarity with co-occurring disorder treatment and integrated care approaches.
- Experience in community mental health or safety-net settings.
Preferred
- 7+ years of psychiatric practice, including work with high-acuity or underserved populations.
- Experience building clinical programs, systems, or infrastructure in behavioral health organizations.
- Telehealth experience.
- Bilingual (Spanish-speaking) preferred.

Role Details
- Job Type: Part-Time / Fractional (Hourly)
- Direct Patient Care: May provide direct patient care as needed with an emphasis on supervision and oversight of Medical Team.
- Hourly Rate: $96.15 $144.23/hour
- Travel: Occasional community and home-based visits; telehealth engagement required.
