Job Summary:

To provide rehabilitative services to consumers with mental illness, in the form of instruction, support, and assistance for the purpose of promoting psychiatric stability, social competencies, personal and emotional adjustment, and independent living skills.

Scope of the Position:

The Mental Health Practitioner will report to a designated supervisor. The Practitioner will provide services that are rehabilitative and enable the client to develop and enhance psychiatric stability, personal and emotional adjustment, social competencies, community skills, and independent living skills. The Practitioner will support the client in strengthening skill areas needed according to their treatment plan. The practitioner is responsible for basic cleanliness, and maintaining of the program site and contents within site (office equipment). The agency provides services to clients in the metro area. The number of clients served by each practitioner varies by the type of case and intensity of services provided. The agency provides services to adults.

Qualifications/Educational Requirements:

Mental health practitioner qualifications

(a) An individual who is qualified in at least one of the ways described in paragraph (b) to (d) may serve as a mental health practitioner.

(b) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner through relevant coursework if the individual completes at least 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in behavioral sciences or related fields and:

(1) has at least 2,000 hours of experience providing services to individuals with:

(i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or

(ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to a client;

(2) is fluent in the non-English language of the ethnic group to which at least 50 percent of the individual's clients belong, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to a client;

(3) is working in a day treatment program under section 256B.0671, subdivision 3, or 256B.0943;

(4) has completed a practicum or internship that (i) required direct interaction with adult clients or child clients, and

(ii) was focused on behavioral sciences or related fields; or

(5) is in the process of completing a practicum or internship as part of a formal undergraduate or graduate training program in social work, psychology, or counseling.

(c) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner through work experience if the individual:

(1) has at least 4,000 hours of experience in the delivery of services to individuals with:

(i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or

(ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to clients; or

(2) receives treatment supervision at least once per week until meeting the requirement in clause (1) of 4,000 hours of experience and has at least 2,000 hours of experience providing services to individuals with:

(i) a mental illness or a substance use disorder; or

(ii) a traumatic brain injury or a developmental disability, and completes the additional training described in section 245I.05, subdivision 3, paragraph (c), before providing direct contact services to clients.

(d) An individual is qualified as a mental health practitioner if the individual has a master's or other graduate degree in behavioral sciences or related fields.

ARMHS experience highly preferred but not required.

  4. Practice effective decision making
  5. Create professional reports
  6. Handle crisis situations and follow through of supervisor’s directives
  7. Identify client needs and treatment plan goals
  8. Work with culturally diverse populations.
  9. Basic computer skills required
  10. Must be able to understand and communicate the English language
  11. Must be able to use and maintain a daily schedule

Responsibilities/essential functions: The person in this position must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations.

A. Provide Mental Health Rehabilitative Services

  1. Facilitate intake meetings
  2. Provide direct skills with the client’s involvement
  3. Develop a Recovery goal, Rehab goal, and Objective with client
  4. Utilize Illness Management and Recovery (ARMHS)
  5. Practitioner will engage in outside ongoing education and continuing education required to maintain their position
  6. Provide parent management training
  7. Use motivational interviewing skills
  8. Facilitate CBT skills with consumers
  9. Make weekly phone calls to appropriate providers
  10. Prepare History for Diagnostic Assessment
  11. Provide confidentiality
  12. Coordinate services with county case managers, family/guardian of client, work personnel, medical personnel, etc.
  13. Participate in professional meetings and workshops
  14. Develop therapeutic relationship with team and consumers
  15. Perform other duties as assigned

B. Documentation

  1. Maintain client files, update client files, update treatment plans quarterly, do all required documentation, and registration form as specified in department of human services guidelines.
  2. Complete accurate case notes on individual, family and group skills for each billable unit.
  3. Prepare written reports and state mandated paperwork
  4. Complete case notes in session
  5. Secure car files
  6. And other duties as assigned

C. Provide Community Bases Services

  1. Must have current driver’s license in good standing
  2. Have comprehensive auto insurance
  3. Maintain own reliable transportation
  4. Provide services in various billable locations
  5. Maintain staff and professional relationships with consumers and their individual community and property

D. Public Relations/Networking/Liaison

  1. Responsible for the reputation and public image of the agency
  2. Develop and maintain positive working relationships within the community
  3. Refer clients to other professional as needed with supervisor approval
  4. Communicate with other providers involved
  5. Practitioner will educate self on community resources
  6. Have knowledge of all agency programs

E. Insurance/County/3rd Party Payers

  1. General knowledge of 3rd party insurance coverage and benefits
  2. A working understanding medical billing
  3. Maintaining accurate and current billing information on each consumer
  4. Communicate with billing office if any changes

F. And Other Duties as Assigned
