Job DescriptionAssistant Controller (Non-Profit)
Your Role:
Responsible to provide high-level support and direction to Finance Team and Program Management.
- Establishes and maintains internal controls
- Maintains and updates Finance Procedure Manual
- Ensures compliance with accounting standards and financial regulatory requirements
- Work with Development Department to draft budgets for new funding proposals
- Understand grant budgeting guidelines and processes, including the budget submission and reporting requirements of new and existing grant funders; ensure grant budgets are in line with funders’ guidelines
- Monitor that accounting processes are in place to capture grant expenditures completely and accurately
- Analyze spend rate of grants; provide early warning on spending variances; complete modifications
- Liaison to insurance broker for general insurance renewals
- Supervise Accounting Analyst (Cash Receipts recording & other G/L, Financial reporting responsibilities)
- Assist in management of the month end and year end close
- Participate in annual audits and serve as backup liaison to external auditors
- Research and correct inaccuracies in financial records and implement process improvements
- Review Payroll Allocations and Position Assignments
- Perform special projects and analysis as required by the CFO and Director of Finance/Controller
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting. Master’s Degree preferred.
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in financial management including financial analysis and reporting, external audit interface, nonprofit grant administration, budgeting and internal controls.
- Accounting Certification (CPA, CMA, or CFM) preferred.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and applicable regulations
- Knowledge of complex financial systems
- Skilled in the application of advanced Excel functions including pivot tables and vlookup
- Proficiency with other Microsoft Office programs
