Attention all Dental & Medical Personnel : Be sure and read this!
W4 Versus 1099 Tax Payers Beware!
Are you being classified as an Independent Contractor, receiving a 1099 at the end of the year? If so, taxpayers beware!
While temping on your own, all dental personnel should know this.
When you are misclassified as an independent contractor, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for not only your 7.5% of the employees tax responsibility, but also the dentist who has hired you to temp, at the rate of 7.5%, regarding their Social Security, Unemployment Insurance and Worker's Compensation. (These taxes will be coming out of your pocket at the end of the year). Therefore, always request a W4, not a 1099.
Give this some thought:
If the office does not provide a W4 and provides a 1099, be ready to raise your temp rate from (example) $65.00 per hr., to $79.00 per hr. This will help the employee cover all payroll taxes, because at the end of the day someone is going to be responsible for these taxes regardless of who is paying for it.
We hope this helps!!
