Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner- PRN

JOB SUMMARY: The Nurse Practitioner will provide psychiatric evaluation and services to patients under the supervision of a physician in Bluestone Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors and document any unusual incidents. Provide care appropriate to the condition and age of the patient.
  • Participate in treatment planning for each patient and work cooperatively as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Review clinical information to determine appropriate level of care for patients referred for services for admission and continued stay.
  • Facilitate admission of patients to the inpatient hospital, including reviewing all clinical information presented by intake, entering/validating all admission, medications, and precaution orders. Perform initial psychiatric evaluations within 24 hours of admission and all subsequent daily psychiatric progress notes.
  • Communicate with guardians to gather historical information and consent for medications within the first 24 hours of patient admission. Provide education/counseling for patients and their families on an ongoing basis.
  • Ensure all services are medically necessary and appropriate by adhering to all accreditation and certification standards.
  • Order, prescribe, dispense and administer drugs and medical devices within scope of practice (See individual state laws). Defer to the supervising physician with difficult cases or when a case is out of the scope of practice.
  • Initiate and continue seclusion/restraint orders as needed.
  • Work weekend and holiday rotations as the psychiatric provider for the hospital. Provide on-call coverage after-hours for weekends and holidays.
  • Provide written or verbal communication to all payor sources in a timely manner when requested.
  • Perform and/or order diagnostic and therapeutic procedures/tests such as lab work, x-ray and ultrasound.
  • Interpret laboratory and diagnostic test results. Interpret subjective and objective data to formulate a diagnosis and develop corresponding treatment plan within scope of practice.
  • Ensure all documentation meets current standards and policies and is completed on the day of service.
  • Assess and document patients and/or their family’s psychosocial issues.
  • Follow the seven (7) medication rights and reduce the potential for medication errors.
  • Treat patients and families with respect and dignity; provide emotional support.
  • Collaborate with medical staff and community-based agencies regarding evaluation, recommendation and referral disposition as needed.
  • Keep current with advances in the psychiatric field through continuing education, seminars/conferences, professional societies and journals, etc.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, supervision, and on-going training.
  • All required trainings, certifications and licensure must be kept current in accordance with applicable licensing and accreditation regulations and standards.
  • Respect the privacy of clients and hold in confidence all information obtained during the client’s treatment. All client-related documents should be handled in accordance with Agency guidelines on confidential material.
  • Maintain high standards of ethical and professional conduct and adhere to Agency policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education: Minimum BSN, MSN; Ohio Nursing and Advanced Nurse Practitioner Licensure; Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Licensure: Current OH Registered Nurse Practitioner license required; Current BLS and ACLS certification preferred.
    • Registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
    • Must be supervised by a physician.
    • Scope of practice is related directly to the NP’s supervising physician and individual state laws.
  • Skills/Competencies:
    • Knowledgeable of psychotropic drugs and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
    • Possess theoretical knowledge of psychopathology, current psychotherapies and intervention techniques.
    • Understand community and consumer cultural, social and economic beliefs, values and service needs.
    • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
    • Demonstrate basic computer knowledge for the implementation of patient information electronic record keeping.
    • Must be emotionally and physically stable to work with the clientele, model self-care and assist the patient/client in meetings his/her goals.
    • Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training required.
    • Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively and effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
    • Demonstrate attention to detail.
    • Demonstrate ability to convey relevant clinical information in an accurate and concise manner.
    • Demonstrate aptitude for working with children and adolescents with mental illness.
  • Experience: A minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a behavioral health setting preferred.
