Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and reliable Asphalt Paver Operator to join our paving crew. This position will be responsible for operating and maintaining asphalt paving machines to spread and level hot mix asphalt on roads, parking lots, driveways, and other surfaces. This role requires precision, mechanical aptitude, and a focus on safety to ensure high-quality pavement results. The ideal candidate will work closely with the paving team to meet project deadlines and maintain consistent production standards in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Machine Operation: Operate asphalt paver equipment (e.g., rubber or track-type pavers) using pedals, levers, and steering controls to spread and level asphalt mix evenly across designated surfaces.
- Material Management: Monitor the flow of asphalt into the paver hopper, ensuring a consistent supply from haul trucks and maintaining at least 25% capacity to avoid interruptions.
- Quality Control: Adjust machine settings (e.g., speed, thickness, width) based on project specifications, stakes, and level gauges to achieve a smooth, uniform mat.
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform daily inspections, fueling, and minor maintenance on the paver, such as cleaning, greasing, and reporting mechanical issues to supervisors.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and remain aware of surroundings, including overhead obstructions and crew members.
- Team Coordination: Collaborate with laborers, roller operators, and foremen to ensure continuous paving operations and address issues like segregation or uneven distribution.
- Documentation: Collect load tickets from truck drivers if required and report production data or delays to the foreman.
- Seasonal Duties: Assist with snow removal and de-icing during winter months.
- Other: Miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Experience: 1–3 years of experience operating asphalt paving machines preferred; familiarity with asphalt paving processes is required. Knowledge of sport court installation a plus.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to sit for extended periods, operate hand and foot controls, lift up to 50 lbs., and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Skills: Proficiency in operating paving equipment; basic mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting and maintenance; ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; on-the-job training may be provided for candidates with related experience.
- Additional Requirements: Ability to pass a drug test as part of a drug-free workplace policy.
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required. Must meet insurability standard. The ability to tow trailers or transport equipment is a plus.
- Phone: Must have cell phone to clock in and out daily, log jobs, and follow other company communications.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed outdoors at residential, commercial, or municipal properties, depending on the project.
- Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, heavy materials, and seasonal weather is common; some tasks may involve heights or confined spaces.
- Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak construction or landscaping seasons (spring through fall).
- Rare but possible multi-day, out-of-town trips, including long-distance travel, and overnight stays.
Salary and Benefits
- Pay Range: Starting wage aligns with local non-union standards (apart from prevailing wage jobs) and is commensurate with experience, versatility, and additional skills like lawncare/chemical application.
- Benefits:
- Medical-partial percentage paid by the company after 60 days,
