Job Description

Company Overview
Are you a results-driven problem-solver eager to make a meaningful impact on the world? Do you believe climate change is the defining challenge of our time? If so, Biomason needs you.

Biomason is the only company in the world harnessing biology to produce cement. Since 2012, we have leveraged microorganisms to grow sustainable, structural biocement® under ambient conditions—reinventing traditional cement and offering a planet-friendly alternative to carbon-intensive construction materials.

We are seeking dedicated, passionate, and hardworking individuals to join our growing team in Research Triangle Park, NC. Together, we can end the world’s dependence on carbon-emitting building materials and change the way we build.

Biomason is privately held and headquartered in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. To learn more, visit www.biomason.com. We offer a competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k) with employer match, generous paid time off, and more.

Position Summary
Biomason is seeking a Research Scientist specializing in Concrete, to help lead the development, testing, and optimization of bioconcrete products incorporating biocement. This role is highly applied, bridging laboratory research with real-world product development. The ideal candidate will have expertise in aggregate characterization, concrete mix design, statistical experimental design and modeling, and mechanical/durability testing of concrete products. This position reports to the Vice President of R&D and may require occasional international travel to support partnerships, pilot projects, and scale-up initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize bioconcrete formulations incorporating biocement for strength, durability, and performance

  • Apply statistical methods (DOE, regression modeling, multivariate analysis) to design experiments and build predictive models

  • Characterize concrete materials using industry-standard testing (ASTM, ACI, EN, and other international standards)

  • Translate lab-scale findings into pilot- and production-scale applications

  • Collaborate with cross-functional R&D, engineering, and manufacturing teams, as well as external partners

  • Prepare clear technical documentation and communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Remain current with advances in cement chemistry, biomineralization, and sustainable construction materials

Qualifications

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Concrete Science, Materials Science, or a related field

  • Minimum of 3 years of direct experience in biocement, bioconcrete, or cementitious material research, product development, or testing

  • Hands-on experience with pre-cast concrete manufacturing (wet and/or dry) preferred; RMX concrete production experience a plus

  • Strong background in statistical experimental design (DOE) and computational/data modeling

  • Experience in scaling laboratory methods to pilot or production environments

Competencies

  • Strong analytical thinker with creative problem-solving skills

  • Organized and detail-oriented; able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently

  • Commitment to laboratory and site safety protocols

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work in laboratory and pilot plant environments for extended periods

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally

  • Manual dexterity for handling laboratory equipment and test specimens

Work Conditions

  • Work performed primarily in laboratory, pilot plant, and potentially manufacturing environments

  • Occasional exposure to wet or dusty conditions, heavy equipment, and industrial noise

  • Often exposed to odors

  • Routinely works in office environments

  • Works around heavy objects or machinery

  • Frequently works on slippery or uneven surfaces

  • Periodically exposed to outdoor weather, noise, heat/cold, dust, and industrial environments

  • Periodic international and domestic travel required to support projects and partnerships
