Position Summary
We are seeking a licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management services in an outpatient behavioral health setting. The PMHNP works collaboratively with therapists and clinical staff to support recovery-focused, evidence-based mental health care.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication management visits
- Prescribe, monitor, and adjust psychotropic medications according to Virginia Board of Nursing regulations
- Monitor clients for medication effectiveness, side effects, interactions, and adherence
- Provide medication education to clients and families, including risks, benefits, and alternatives
- Collaborate with therapists, QMHPs, and case managers to ensure integrated treatment planning
- Utilize DSM-5 criteria and ICD-10 diagnostic coding
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in compliance with HIPAA, DMAS, and Beyond Therapy LLC policies
- Comply with DEA and controlled substance prescribing requirements
- Participate in treatment team meetings, case consultations, and quality improvement initiatives
- Stay current with evidence-based psychopharmacology practices
Intake & Follow-Up Visit Guidelines
Intake Visit:
- Comprehensive psychiatric assessment
- Collection of personal, medical, psychiatric, and medication history
- Evaluation of current symptoms and functional impairments
- Development of an individualized medication treatment plan
- Patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment options, and expected outcomes
- Coordination with therapists and case managers for integrated care
Follow-Up Visit:
- Review of medication efficacy, side effects, and adherence
- Adjustment of medications as clinically indicated
- Reassessment of psychiatric symptoms and overall functioning
- Documentation of progress and updated treatment planning
- Reinforcement of patient education and coping strategies
- Coordination with the care team for continuity of care
Medication Management Policies
- Prescriptions must comply with Virginia Board of Nursing regulations and DEA requirements
- Documentation for every medication visit must include assessment, diagnosis, medications prescribed, rationale, and patient education
- Side effects and adverse events must be monitored, documented, and reported per protocol
- Medication refills require review of client history, adherence, and symptom status
- Collaborative communication with therapists and care team is required for any changes in medication
- All records are maintained confidentially in the EHR system, consistent with HIPAA and agency standards
Qualifications
- Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited PMHNP program
- Active and unrestricted Virginia PMHNP license
- National PMHNP certification
- DEA registration and prescriptive authority
- Experience in outpatient psychiatric medication management
- Knowledge of Virginia behavioral health and Medicaid requirements preferred
- Strong clinical judgment, communication, and documentation skills
