Job Description

Barr-Reeve Community Schools is seeking a caring, dependable, and student-centered Elementary Paraprofessional to join our team. We are looking for an individual who is passionate about supporting students and teachers while contributing to a positive, engaging, and productive learning environment.


Position Summary

To provide academic, behavioral, and instructional support to students under the direction of a teacher; to assist with the implementation of classroom instruction and student support activities; and to contribute to a positive and inclusive learning environment.


Essential Functions

The following duties are considered essential functions of this position.


Student Support Responsibilities

  • Provide academic assistance to students in one-to-one, small group, and classroom settings as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist teachers with academic instruction and implementation of classroom lessons.
  • Reinforce instructional concepts and skills introduced by the teacher.
  • Support students in completing assignments, projects, and classroom activities.
  • Provide behavioral support and supervision as directed by administration and teaching staff.
  • Encourage positive student engagement and participation in learning activities.
  • Assist students with the use of instructional technology, media equipment, and educational resources.

Instructional Support Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing lesson plans under the direct supervision of a teacher.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials and classroom resources.
  • Assist teachers in modifying or adapting materials to meet the needs of individual students or small groups.
  • Support intervention and enrichment activities as assigned.
  • Provide clerical support to teachers and other professional staff.

Data Collection and Documentation

  • Observe student performance and behavior.
  • Collect and record student data as directed.
  • Provide information and feedback to teachers regarding student progress and needs.
  • Maintain records in accordance with district procedures and teacher direction.

Classroom Environment and Student Supervision

  • Provide appropriate supervision of students at all times.
  • Assist with classroom management and the enforcement of school expectations.
  • Support a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.
  • Supervise students during non-instructional times, including recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, field trips, and other assigned activities.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Collaborate effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff members.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers, students, parents, and staff.
  • Perform clerical duties and other support tasks as assigned.

Additional Duties

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the superintendent, principal, teacher, or designee.


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience working with children in an educational setting is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an educational team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in working with elementary-aged children.


Title I Qualification Requirements

All paraprofessionals must meet Title I qualification requirements through one of the following:

  • Completion of at least 60 college credit hours from an accredited institution;
  • Associate's Degree or higher; or
  • Successful completion of an approved paraprofessional assessment within the first 30 days of employment at the employee's expense.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and movement throughout the school day.
  • Ability to assist students and perform classroom support duties.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families.
  • Ability to operate instructional technology and classroom equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of materials and equipment up to approximately 25 pounds.


Work Environment

Work is performed primarily in an elementary school setting. The environment includes regular interaction with students, staff, and families and may involve moderate noise levels during classroom activities.


Hours and Benefits

  • Monday through Friday following the student calendar.
  • Regular work schedule: 7:35 a.m. 3:05 p.m.
  • 182 contract days per school year.
  • Eligible for health, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, and PERF retirement benefits.
  • Fifteen (15) paid leave days annually.


Terms of Employment

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check as required by Indiana law and compliance with all Board policies and procedures. This position follows the terms and conditions established by the school corporation for support staff employees.
