Job Description

The Welding Technician/Trainer will be responsible for conducting welder performance testing and providing high-quality training in welding and cutting techniques to new and existing employees. This position will involve both classroom instruction and hands-on training in the shop, ensuring that all personnel are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform welding tasks to the highest standards.

Essential Functions Performed by the Position

  • Training and Instruction:
    • Develop, implement, and deliver comprehensive welding training programs for employees at various skill levels.
    • Provide hands-on training in various welding techniques, including SAW, FCAW, MIG, TIG, SMAW, and Carbon Arc Gouging .
    • Teach safety protocols and best practices for working with welding equipment, materials, and in the shop environment.
    • Assess trainee performance and provide feedback and corrective guidance to ensure skill development and safe practices.
    • Conduct refresher training on various aspects of welding techniques.
    • Facilitate and instruct a blueprint reading training program .
    • Stay current with advancements in welding techniques, equipment, and safety regulations to ensure training is relevant and up to date.
  • Curriculum Development:
    • Design and update welding training materials and manuals to reflect the latest industry standards and technologies.
    • Stay current with advancements in welding techniques, equipment, and safety regulations to ensure training is relevant and up to date.
  • Welder Performance Qualifications:
    • Conduct and monitor welder performance qualification tests
    • Process welder test coupons by performing visual and destructive testing (side bends)
    • Send / receive coupons for radiographic inspection
    • Track, Log, and update welder performance qualifications and matrix chart
    • Send receive procedure qualification weld coupons to 3rd party weld laboratory for testing
  • Monitoring and Evaluation:
    • Conduct practical and written tests to evaluate trainee skills and knowledge.
    • Monitor trainees’ progress and ensure they meet performance standards before advancing to production tasks.
    • Maintain accurate records of training completion and certifications, and provide to HR.
  • Safety Compliance:
    • Ensure all training environments comply with OSHA and plant-specific safety regulations.
    • Promote a culture of safety by leading by example and reinforcing safe work habits among trainees.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the plant’s leadership and production teams to identify training needs and gaps.
    • Provide recommendations for improvements in welding processes and techniques to increase productivity and quality.
  • Equipment Management:
    • Oversee the maintenance and proper use of welding equipment and tools in the weld school.
    • Ensure that all equipment is in working order and available for training purposes.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of welding safety standards and practices.
  • Strong welding skills - using SMAW, FCAW, GTAW, SAW, and Carbon Arc Gouging processes
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to break down complex welding techniques into understandable training modules.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and safety.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Outlook , Teams, Office, etc..)

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited welding program or equivalent OTJ experience welding in a heavy fabrication shop.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in heavy fabrication and welding, with expertise in various welding methods (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW, SAW , and GTAW etc.).
  • Previous teaching or training experience is highly preferred.

Licenses or Certifications Required

  • CWI/CWE certification is preferred, or the ability and pre-requisites to obtain the certification.
  • OSHA 10/30-hour certification is a plus.
