OVERVIEW

Provides both hands-on general accounting support and overall management of non-profit financials. The Controller contributes to the organization’s mission by overseeing all accounting and financial operations of the organization. This senior level position directs and supervises the Assistant Controller-Stores, General Accountant and Senior Finance and Accounting Specialist and provides consultation to Board of Directors and Executive Director/CEO on strategic accounting matters, financial performance and budget. This position plays a leadership role in developing a positive culture with a focus on accuracy.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and/or review financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements, to provide accurate and timely financial information to management and stakeholders.
  • Responsible for the management and oversight, as well as hands-on execution of the month-end, quarterly and year-end closing processes, including the review and approval of journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Development and Director of Vincentian Services to ensure accounting for donor funds is appropriate.
  • Oversee the preparation for, management and coordination of all external audits, working closely with auditors and the Audit Committee to prepare necessary documentation and resolve any audit issues.
  • Develop, establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard the organization’s assets and ensure compliance with financial regulations and accounting standards.
  • Oversee the budgeting and forecasting processes, collaborating with various departments to ensure financial goals are met; assist with interim budget reviews.
  • The Controller reports to the Director of Finance with a dotted line to the Executive Director/CEO, and is responsible for and provides guidance, leadership, and training to the accounting team.
  • Assist in strategic initiatives or special projects as needed. Examples include ERP evaluation/implementation and the consolidation of financial information to mirror the audited financials.
  • Contributes to the development and execution of the organization’s financial strategy.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining accounting policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with professional standards, state and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in presenting financial reporting and potential risk areas to senior management and board members.
  • Ensure compliance with all tax regulations and coordinate with the outside professional service firms regarding the preparation and filing of tax returns (Form 990 and 1099s).
  • Providing other support as requested by Director of Finance and/or Executive Director/CEO

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance with a minimum of 8 years’ experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, including financial reporting & analysis, budgets and project management experience
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector and/or retail industry is strongly preferred.


SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:

  • GAAP (Advanced Level) and regulations affecting charities.
  • Theories, principles, methods and procedures of professional accounting (Comprehensive level)
  • Financial reporting & analysis, budget and project management
  • Advanced MS Office skills (Expert level in Excel) required, and knowledge of QuickBooks preferred
