Job Description

Metal Fabrication Process Coordinator

Metal Fabrication | ERP (BOMs & Routings) | Blueprint Interpretation

Position Summary

The Metal Fabrication Process Coordinator supports day-to-day manufacturing operations by translating engineering drawings and customer requirements into accurate ERP data, routings, and bills of material. This role serves as a critical link between engineering, production, and the shop floor, ensuring that fabrication jobs are properly set up, sequenced, and executed efficiently.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in a metal fabrication environment, is comfortable working in an ERP/MRP system, and can confidently read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld symbols, and shop prints.

Manufacturing & Process Coordination

  • Create, maintain, and update Bills of Material (BOMs) and manufacturing routings for fabricated parts and assemblies.
  • Translate engineering drawings and customer specifications into clear, accurate shop-ready information.
  • Define and sequence fabrication operations (cutting, forming, welding, machining, finishing, assembly).
  • Support production scheduling by ensuring jobs are properly set up in the ERP system.
  • Coordinate with production supervisors, weld leads, and machine operators to resolve routing or process questions.

ERP / MRP System Management

  • Enter and maintain accurate job data in the ERP system, including:
  • Part numbers
  • BOM structures
  • Routings and labor standards
  • Work centers and operation codes
  • Audit ERP data for accuracy and completeness prior to job release.
  • Support work order creation, revisions, and engineering change updates.
  • Assist in identifying process inefficiencies or data issues impacting production.

Blueprint & Documentation Review

  • Read and interpret fabrication drawings, including:
  • Structural and sheet metal prints
  • Weld symbols and notes
  • Tolerances and material specifications
  • Clarify discrepancies between drawings, BOMs, and routings.
  • Work with engineering or customers to resolve print or scope questions.

Cross-Functional Support

  • Act as a liaison between engineering, production, purchasing, and quality.
  • Support purchasing with material requirements and cut lists as needed.
  • Assist quality and production teams with documentation, revisions, and job clarification.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to manufacturing processes and data accuracy.

Qualifications

Required

  • 3+ years of experience in a metal fabrication environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of BOMs, routings, and work orders.
  • Experience using an ERP/MRP system (e.g., JobBOSS, Epicor, SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, ECI, or similar).
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings.
  • Understanding of common fabrication processes (laser/plasma cutting, press brake, welding, machining, finishing).
  • Strong attention to detail and data accuracy.
  • Effective communication skills with both shop-floor and office teams.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with military standards, ISO or quality management systems.
  • Basic understanding of production scheduling and capacity planning.
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement or lean manufacturing efforts.

Education

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent hands-on experience in metal fabrication will be considered in lieu of formal education.

Work Environment

  • Combination of office and shop-floor interaction.
  • Regular exposure to manufacturing operations, equipment, and fabrication processes.
  • May require occasional shop floor walkthroughs to support production.

Why This Role Matters

This position plays a key role in ensuring jobs are released accurately, production flows smoothly, and the shop floor has the information it needs to succeed. Strong performance in this role directly impacts efficiency, quality, and on-time delivery.
