GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to perform work associated with construction and maintaining of roads, bridges and other facilities that are the responsibility of Oconee County. Duties includes operation and maintenance of light trucks and equipment, semi-skilled work and manual labor, while working in various environments and climates. This position is responsible for cutting and trimming trees, operating a bucket truck, and running a chainsaw. This role includes assisting asphalt and pipe crews with their daily duties and performing tasks related to road and tree maintenance. The operator handles heavy lifting, uses hand tools, and ensures roads are maintained and repaired efficiently and safely. This position will report to their respective assigned crew leader.

- Performs daily maintenance inspections on equipment and vehicles.
- Operates work trucks, small equipment, and hand tools.
- Operates light equipment (i.e., skid steer, backhoe, mini-excavator and mowing tractors) for the purpose of clearing, grubbing and grading.
- Operates heavy equipment (i.e., front-end loader, rollers, dozer, pan, motor grader, paver and track-hoe), for the purpose of compacting, loading materials or transporting equipment.
- Uses of hand tools and power tools frequently (i.e., shovels, hammers, wrenches, drills and chainsaws).
- Works during inclement weather events; including working after hours.
- Cuts and trims tree and operates a bucket truck.
- Sharpens, maintains, and makes saw chains.
- Operates an asphalt saw to cut patches in the roads.
- Repairs and cleans up roads after storms.
- Handles heavy lifting, including bags of cold patch, bags of concrete, shovels of asphalt, and brush.
- Patches potholes in asphalt.
- Drives company trucks to job sites and flags traffic.
- Cleans ditches.
- Operates hydro seeder, pipe washer, chipper, and hot box.
- Loots and finishes asphalt.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Ability to work safely in hazardous areas or inclement weather.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Required: Must be able to obtain a valid SC commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements within six months of hire.
Preferred: None.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
This position has the following special vision requirements: close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less); distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more); color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors); peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up or down and to the left and right when vision is fixed on a given point); depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships); adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in a high risk indoor and/or outdoor work environment; may encounter noise, weather, extreme temperatures, moisture, humidity, dust, odors, fumes, gases, vibration, electrical hazards, mechanical hazards, or moving mechanical parts. In the performance of their duties, employees may be required to use personal protective equipment such as face masks, goggles, boots, gloves, or eye shields.
