Controls Engineer
Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer to design, develop, and maintain industrial automation systems that control machinery and processes. The role focuses on PLC and HMI programming, electrical control design, system integration, commissioning, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable, safe, and efficient operation of production equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, program, and maintain PLC logic for industrial control systems (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
- Develop, configure, and optimize HMI screens and operator interfaces for clear, safe, and efficient operation.
- Create and review electrical control schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts; support control panel design and fabrication.
- Perform system integration, including communication setup between PLCs, HMIs, drives, and SCADA using relevant protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet, etc.).
- Commission and start up automation systems on-site, conduct functional testing, and validate performance against specifications.
- Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, and network issues to minimize downtime and improve system reliability.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including control narratives, PLC/HMI code comments, test plans, and as-built drawings.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, process, and project teams to deliver complete solutions on schedule and within budget.
- Apply continuous improvement principles to optimize control strategies, reduce cycle times, and enhance safety and efficiency.
- Ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety standards, and company procedures during design, installation, and maintenance activities.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in controls engineering, including PLC and HMI programming and commissioning in an industrial environment.
- Strong PLC programming skills with experience on common platforms (Allen-Bradley preferred).
- Proven experience developing and configuring HMIs and operator interfaces for production systems.
- Solid understanding of electrical control systems, schematics, wiring practices, and panel design.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet, OPC-UA) and field devices.
- Experience with commissioning, system integration, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis of control systems.
- Proficient in reading and creating electrical and control documentation (schematics, wiring diagrams, IO lists).
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills; able to work on-site for commissioning and support.
- Knowledge of safety standards, electrical codes (NEC/IEC), and industry best practices; experience with continuous improvement methodologies is a plus.
