Job Summary
This position is responsible for the maintenance of track infrastructure including: installation, inspection and repair of rail components, roadbed and switches.
Primary Activities and Responsibilities
- Participate in group discussions including job briefings, safety meetings and process reviews.
- Inspect and observe the condition of the track, roadbed, and track right-of-way for problems or defects.
- Perform track maintenance, repair, and installation.
- Remove, replace and install track and track components (e.g., ties, spikes, rails, bars, etc.)
- Slide and align tie plates.
- Drill holes through rails for insertion of bolts and tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends or rails together.
- Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge. o Cut rails to specific lengths. o Adjust lift and roll rails. o Replace or repair track switches with specific components. o Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication.
- Lift, sort and carry track materials and equipment.
- Unload, remove, tamp and replace ballast.
- Operate Equipment o Service trucks, back hoes, speed swing loaders, tampers, regulators, bobcat, forklifts, hydraulic jacks, hydraulic spike hammer, grappel truck, grader, track horse, dump trucks
- Operate Tools o Impact wrenches, grinders, chain saws and various hand tools.
- Dig holes and trenches.
- Install and repair street and railroad crossings.
- Cut brush and vegetation from right-of-way.
- Inspect equipment daily.
- Maintain daily records and time sheets.
- Comply with company and federal safety rules, policies and procedures to include wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns and taking appropriate action.
- Complete annual training and pass safety and track worker rules examination.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- 21 years of age or older
- Valid Driver's License
- Able to read, write and communicate in English.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Endorsement Class A preferred, a Class B Endorsement is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Outside work experience (e.g. construction, heavy equipment operation, farming, landscaping)
- Welding Experience

- Verbal comprehension (Understand oral and written communications-both general and technical)
- Communication skills (provide clear instructions/directions)
- Reasoning skills (problem solving and trouble shooting skills)
- Basic Math
Physical Requirements
- Heavy work, lifting up to 80 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity/tracking/inspection.
- Stooping/bending/kneeling/crouch/balancing/climbing/holding/grasping/turning and pulling.
- Working/walking on uneven surfaces.
- Walking/standing for extended periods of time.
Environmental Conditions
Work outside in all weather conditions, on uneven surfaces, around loud noise and fumes and at elevated heights (i.e. bridges).
Shifts/Hours
Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, overtime, and various shift work.
Pay Rate
Rate $326.77 per day
Training
Company paid on the job training (which may require travel) provided.
Probationary Period
60 Days
Union Membership
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, union membership and monthly dues are required.
