Position Summary
Mesabi Metallics is seeking a motivated Environmental Engineer/Scientist Intern to support our mining operations in northern Minnesota. This role provides hands-on experience in environmental management, regulatory compliance, construction inspection and testing, and sustainability initiatives within the mining industry. The intern will work under the guidance of environmental scientists and professional engineers in both field and office settings to ensure our operations meet environmental standards and reporting requirements.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Environmental Site Manager, the Environmental Engineer/Scientist Intern will be responsible for the following:
- Environmental Monitoring & Sampling: Conduct regular field sampling and testing of water, air, and soil quality to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Input, manage, and analyze environmental data. Assist in preparing detailed technical reports, permit applications, and compliance documentation for regulatory agencies (e.g., EPA, DNR, MPCA).
- Construction Oversight & Erosion Control: Perform site inspections of active construction areas (e.g., tailings, roads, processing facilities). Inspect and document erosion and sediment control measures (e.g., silt fences, berms, covers) to ensure compliance with Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPP). Verify the proper installation and maintenance of Best Management Practices (BMPs) for stormwater management.
- Data & Reporting: Maintain accurate field notes, sample logs, and inspection records. Enter data into databases and assist with preparing reports for internal use and regulatory agencies.
- Field Support: Assist with environmental audits, assessments, and general fieldwork. Support project managers with environmental compliance tasks for site reclamation and development.
- Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, geologists, and operations personnel to resolve environmental or operational problems.
- Training & Safety: Participate in safety and environmental training sessions and assist in developing environmental awareness materials for site personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Skills and Qualifications
- Solid understanding of environmental science fundamentals.
- Basic knowledge of environmental regulations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and experience with relevant software such as AutoCAD or GIS is a plus.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and written/oral communication skills.
- Attention to detail and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Possession of a current, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
Education
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) or Master of Science (MS) degree in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline from an accredited university.
Physical Requirements
- This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.
Salary
- $23 - $25 an hour.
