Job Overview

The radiation therapist will administer ionizing radiation to patients with minimal oversight, following the prescriptions and guidelines set by the radiation oncologist, in line with established standards in radiation therapy technology.

Hours: 40 hours per week / Day Shift (Monday - Friday)

Location: Lowell General Hospital - 295 Varnum Avenue - Lowell, MA

(There are 2 full-time positions available for this role)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Radiologic Science.
  • Certification in Radiation Therapy from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
  • Licensed by the Massachusetts Radiation Control Board.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in radiation therapy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) years of experience in radiation therapy.

Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

  • Administers the prescribed therapy accurately with minimal supervision.
  • Verifies prescription, consent forms, diagnosis, patient identification, and treatment schedules before administering dosage.
  • Communicates procedures to patients to ease their concerns.
  • Reinforces the Radiation Oncologist’s guidance to patients regarding treatment reactions and care for the affected area.
  • Monitors patients for any adverse reactions to radiation treatment and reports findings to the Radiation Oncologist and/or nursing staff.
  • Prepares the treatment room and equipment according to the prescription, including immobilization devices and positioning.
  • Escorts patients to and from treatment areas.
  • Safely transfers patients from stretchers and wheelchairs to treatment couches using proper body mechanics.
  • Continuously monitors patients during treatment and simulation, ready to halt treatment and assist if necessary.
  • Assists the Radiation Oncologist during simulations.
  • Supports dosimetry procedures, including calculations and contours.
  • Participates in weekly treatment visits.
  • Engages in patient chart conferences.
  • Conducts daily physics checks on all equipment to identify any malfunctions and reports findings to the appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains accurate daily records of treatments, total doses, and any port films in patient charts, ensuring clarity and organization.
  • Utilizes the IMPAC computer system for charge capture, scheduling, and checklists.
  • Copies films and/or charts as needed.
  • Performs minor clerical tasks such as answering phones, scheduling patients, and photocopying.
  • Takes weekly port films according to established guidelines.
  • Obtains external films and/or reports as necessary.
  • Keeps the therapy department clean and organized, especially patient areas and laundry/linen areas.
  • Transfers blocks into the treatment room and organizes them according to guidelines.
  • Maintains the film file area in an orderly manner.
  • Prepares technical aspects of patient charts and labels simulation films appropriately.
  • Prepares diagnostic procedures using sterile techniques when necessary.
  • Regularly checks accessory equipment for malfunctions and notifies the appropriate personnel for repairs.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, occasional sitting and walking, and lifting of 30-35 lbs.
  • Pushing, pulling, and moving stretchers and machines.
  • Manual dexterity for operating diagnostic equipment and computer keyboards.
  • Ability to hear and see adequately to perform examinations, observe patients, read monitors, and hear alarms.
  • Close contact with patients who may have contagious diseases.
  • Exposure to radiation used in patient treatment.
  • Frequent interactions with patients, physicians, families, and other hospital personnel.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology to evaluate laboratory data and tailor ultrasound examinations safely and accurately.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail for patient education, safety, and comfort, as well as discussing clinical situations with physicians.
  • Ability to maintain focus for extended periods while treating patients.
  • Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care in the assigned service area.
  • Ability to work independently while seeking assistance when needed.
  • Exhibits good judgment and creativity in problem-solving while remaining professional.
  • Responds calmly and appropriately to changes in the work schedule.
  • Collaborates effectively with colleagues and management to foster a high-quality patient care environment.
  • Knowledge of handling blocks and proper equipment usage.
  • Understanding of standard practices consistent with quality care.

Pay Range:
$37.18 - $47.41
