Nutrition

Department of Tribal Health

Hourly Wage: $37.92/Regular/Full-Time


Provides and documents Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to patients served by the Yakama Indian Health Service Unit. Ability to maintain comprehensive detailed reports and correspondence with completed documentation in adherence with State, Federal and Tribal policy for billing purposes.


Evaluates and provides culturally relevant nutrition recommendations to address medical needs. Understands and evaluates nutrition status and its relationship to disease including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal disorders, cancer, and food allergies. Provides nutrition counseling to high nutrition risk participants of the Yakama Nation Women, Infant and Children (WIC) program.


Examples of Work Performed:

Provides and documents MNT and diabetes education services.

Counsel patients, individually or in group sessions, to identify and encourage opportunities for lifestyle changes.

Coordinates with other federal or tribal programs, agencies, and community resources in order to serve as a clinical

resource for nutrition care.

Follows all related Federal, State, local and agency regulations for Registered Dietitian services.

Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest health trends.

Provides individual nutrition counseling to high nutrition risk WIC program participants. Documents care plan in the WIC system and the IHS Electronic Health Record.

Assists Nutrition Manager in evaluating program services and formulating goals and objectives to promote the health of the community.

Reviews patient education materials. Develops new Nutrition or Diabetes specific materials as needed.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of basic principles, practices, and professional standards of providing nutrition services to tribal communities.

Knowledge of the Yakama Nation Personnel Policies.

Knowledge of documenting in patient medical files, HIPAA laws, medical terminology, and Electronic Health Record standards.

Knowledge and proficiency in computer use.

Ability to maintain comprehensive detailed reports and correspondence with completed documentation in adherence with State, Federal and Tribal policy for billing purposes.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, supervisors/managers, and the public.

Ability to encourage a positive attitude toward good nutrition and lifestyle choices.

Minimum Requirements:

Master's Degree in Dietetics from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university. Degrees completed prior to January 2024 are allowed to be grandfathered in with a Bachelor's Degree.

Current credentials as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in the state of Washington or actively pursuing (must obtain credentials within 6 months of hire).

Required to pass pre-employment background check.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Preferred Requirements:

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
