Office and Laboratory Assistant Position (Part-time)
Overview:
Apply for an office/laboratory assistant position for a locally owned and operated lab that continues to expand with each passing year. We are looking for a motivated, organized, and enthusiastic individuals to add to our team! We participate in EPA approved proficiency test programs in order to maintain our laboratory’s certification every year. There will be opportunities to aid in the participation of this program, as well as practice aseptic technique, calibrate equipment, maintain instrument logs, analyze data, perform quality control and assurance procedures when necessary, etc. We work with a versatile clientele ranging from vendors that supply to costco, foodland, wholefoods, and we also do federal and state projects. This position will give the right individual a chance to learn the commercial side, and environmental regulation side of microbiology and chemistry.
This position will offer a candidate the rare opportunity to develop skills in both microbiology and chemistry and is the perfect part time job for a student.
Job Overview:
- Picking up samples (if necessary)
- Learning how to run the tests mentioned above, and being monitored by the principal scientist until cleared to perform tests alone
- Preparing client sampling kits based on their testing needs
- Signing sample chain of custody upon sample receipt to Oahu Laboratory
- Housekeeping duties such as dish washing and general cleaning
- Media preparation and reagent preparation
- Supporting the rest of the team in their tasks when necessary
The main goal of the Lab/Office assistant is to act as an additional set of hands when it comes to media and reagent preparation, dish washing, and sample acceptance. Over time, the technician will be taught more analyses and will eventually be allowed to run tests without the principal scientist’s supervision.
While some of the job overview may seem foreign, we understand that everyone needs to learn from a starting point. With perseverance, the choice candidate will learn a lot through shadowing the principal scientist. Oahu Lab is a team oriented, and positive environment, therefore it is imperative that our lab assistant be a team player. We are patient in teaching all new employees and we understand that some of these tests are rather complex.
Requirements:
- Prefer microbiology knowledge and some organic chemistry
- Availability on Wednesdays at least for a few hours (as it is the busiest day of the week).
Our office hours are M-F 9AM-3PM (samples drop offs after 3PM are not permitted as we account for sample processing time). We are very flexible, and looking for someone who can work a few hours every week (must be available for at least 3 hours on Wednesday between 9AM-3PM).
Hourly compensation will be based on experience.
