Urban Pathways K‐5 College Charter School (UPK5) is seeking reliable, student‐focused Building Substitute Teachers to provide consistent instructional and behavioral support across classrooms in grades K–5. We are actively recruiting candidates interested in a permanent building substitute role for the upcoming school year, as well as qualified applicants available to work on a contract basis through the remainder of the current school year.

The Building Substitute plays a vital role in maintaining continuity of instruction, reinforcing school routines, and supporting a positive school culture during staff absences. The ideal candidate is adaptable, collaborative, and committed to fostering a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain established routines and procedures of the school, classroom, and assigned position.
• Follow lesson plans, classroom expectations, and instructional directions provided by the absent teacher.
• Perform all instructional and non‐instructional duties of the absent employee as assigned, including taking and reporting student attendance.
• Assist administration in implementing all school policies governing student life, conduct, and safety.
• Support classroom management by maintaining order in a fair, consistent, and respectful manner.
• Take all reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, instructional materials, and school facilities.
• Perform duties as assigned by the Building Principal or designated representative.
• Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and school‐sponsored events as required.
• Actively participate in school committees, volunteer opportunities, and community‐building activities.
• Perform all other job‐related duties as assigned to support the daily operation of the school.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree (required).
• Prior experience in an instructional or educational setting.
• Experience working in an urban school setting (preferred).
• Experience in a childcare or youth‐serving setting (minimum one year preferred).
• Ability to work effectively with students, families, and staff from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and classroom management skills.
• Ability to reliably commute to or relocate to Pittsburgh, PA prior to starting work.
• Ability to meet all school and Pennsylvania employment and clearance requirements, including background checks and clearances.
