We are sharing a specialised part-time consulting opportunity for exceptional PhD students and PostDocs with deep expertise in AI, machine learning, or engineering, strong research judgment, and the ability to identify and structure high-impact open questions that could meaningfully shape progress over the next decade.
This role supports current and upcoming remote consulting opportunities focused on structured research workflows, technical evaluation, knowledge base development, and high-quality project execution. Selected professionals will apply their research expertise to identify transformative open questions close to their area of expertise, assess which problems are concrete and tractable, build structured knowledge bases with seminal papers and recent advances, provide expert commentary on why sources matter, follow technical instructions with precision, and contribute to high-quality technical deliverables. This opportunity is especially well-suited to highly analytical researchers who are comfortable synthesizing large research literatures and can distinguish between broad speculation and questions where measurable progress is plausible within the next decade.

High-Impact Open Question Identification
- Propose major open questions where a breakthrough would be transformative
- Focus on problems that are concrete, tractable, and close to your area of expertise
- Help identify research questions where progress can be meaningfully evaluated and would be widely recognized as significant
Knowledge Base Development
- Build structured knowledge bases for selected questions
- Curate seminal papers, key datasets, methods, recent advances, and underrecognized but valuable resources
- Help ensure that research materials are directly relevant, well-organized, and useful for advancing understanding of the selected problem
Research Synthesis & Expert Commentary
- Synthesize large bodies of literature into clear learning paths
- Provide brief expert commentary on why each source and approach matters
- Help maintain quality through high-level research judgment, literature synthesis, and domain-specific reasoning
Ideal Profile
Strong candidates may have:
- Current status as a PhD candidate or PostDoc from a top-tier institution
- Deep expertise in AI, machine learning, engineering, or a closely related research area
- Strong judgment about significance, tractability, and research quality
- Ability to synthesize large research literatures into clear, structured reading paths
- A clear point of view on which open questions truly matter in the field
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong familiarity with frontier open questions in AI and machine learning
- Ability to distinguish transformative research questions from broad or weakly defined problems
- Experience evaluating literature quality, research direction, and long-term significance
- Strong consistency in organizing structured knowledge resources for advanced technical topics

Contract Details
- Independent contractor role
- Fully remote with flexible scheduling
- Hourly compensation of $85–$95 per hour
- Eligibility requires completion of a short form in addition to the interview process
- Time commitment is approximately 8–16 hours per selected question
- Openings available for approximately 50 experts per domain
- Projects may be extended, shortened, or concluded early depending on project needs and performance
- Weekly payments via Stripe or Wise
- Work will not involve access to confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution
