Machine Shop Technician
Job Description
Job Description
Shop Assistant — Customer Service, Production, Machining, & Shipping (Urbana, OH — On-Site)
Looking for a disciplined, motivated individual that's not afraid to express creativity and come up with creative ideas and then deploy them. Must be technically/mechanically savvy and be well versed with Microsoft's Operating System.
Company: Mojo Manufacturing & Operations, LLC
Type: Part-time, W2, on-site
Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday — 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, flexible
Pay: $18/hour to start, moving to $23/hour once cross-trained
About Us
We're a small custom manufacturing shop in Urbana, Ohio. Our main area of business: take customer logos and turn them into custom branding irons and ice stamps — tools people use to brand leather, wood, hats, and food. Every order is one-of-a-kind and machined from solid metal with a CNC Machine. We sell through our own website, Etsy, and directly to wholesale accounts.
Mojo Mfg. also operates as a job shop 10-20% of the time. Custom parts machined to print.
The shop is currently owner-operated, with occasional part-time help. That's the honest picture: it's small, and the person in this role will touch nearly every part of the business.
The Role
Initially this role will be trained on customer service only.
Eventually the role will be a cross-trained position. You'd learn an order from end to end — the customer email that starts it, the artwork that gets prepped, the part that gets machined, and the box that goes out the door.
You don't need manufacturing experience. You need to be reliable, careful, and willing to learn a process and then run it well.
What You'll Do
Customer side
- Respond to customer emails about orders, custom artwork, shipping, and product questions
- Collect and organize customer logo files so they're ready for production
- Make basic adjustments to customer logos and designs to get them production-ready
- Spot problems with a customer's artwork — too small, too detailed, wrong file type, poor contrast — and work with the customer to resolve them before the job hits the machine
- Track orders across our sales platforms and flag anything that's stuck or unusual
- Work from our written SOPs and response templates — you won't be inventing answers from scratch
Shop side
- Run production on our CNC machines once trained — loading material, starting jobs, checking parts
- Deburr, clean, and inspect finished parts
- Package orders and prepare shipments
- Keep the shop organized and materials stocked
What We're Looking For
- Genuinely kind — to frustrated customers, to happy ones, and to everyone else you deal with. This is non-negotiable for us
- Clear, warm written English — a real part of this job is email, so how you write matters
- Careful hands and attention to detail — these are small parts, and a scratch or a wrong dimension means remaking it
- Comfortable with email, Windows File Explorer, and keeping files organized and named correctly
- Willing to learn image editing and, later, CNC operation — we'll train you on all of it
- Able to pick up custom, in-house software quickly — some of the tools you'll use are built by us, so there's no manual to Google
- Organized enough to follow a process, and honest enough to say when something is outside it
- Dependable — in a shop this size, if you're not here, it doesn't happen
Nice to have (not required): experience with Shopify, Etsy, Gmail/Google Workspace, customer support, shipping and fulfillment, machining or any hands-on trade, or graphics work of any kind.
Tools You'll Use
You do not need prior experience with these. We'll train you on all of them.
- Gmail / Google Workspace — the inbox you'll be covering
- Windows File Explorer — organizing and naming customer artwork files
- Inkscape — vector image editing software, used to clean up and adjust customer logos
- Our in-house applications — custom software we've built for order and file handling
- CNC mills and lathe — running production jobs once you're trained
- Autodesk Fusion — 3D modeling, introduced later once you're comfortable with everything above
Schedule & Hours
We work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. Core hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and there's real flexibility in when you start and stop.
Workload varies with order volume. On any day you're scheduled, you're guaranteed at least 4 hours of pay, and a full day is 8. Most weeks land somewhere in between.
Pay & Growth
- $18/hour to start
- $23/hour once you're cross-trained and running the full process confidently — customer service through manufacturing, packaging, and shipping
We'd rather get you to $23 quickly than string it out. The raise is tied to capability, not to a calendar.
Why This Job
- Flexible hours within our workdays, and a three-day 'weekend' every week
- You'll learn CNC machining, graphics work, and e-commerce operations — a genuinely unusual mix of skills
- Small and owner-operated means direct access to the owner and no layers between your suggestions and the decision
- Real room to grow as the shop grows
