About Our Internships
JF&CS offers internship opportunities most well-suited tograduate studentsstudying social work, psychology, and other mental health disciplines. The program is designed to provide hands-on experience master's-level students who are passionate about serving the populations that we support.
Internship positions are available in the following areas:
Basic Needs Navigation:
- Support clients in emergent situations and connect them to available community resources.
- Performs assessments, navigates community resources, and utilizes trauma-informed clinical skills to provide short-term and long-term support for people seeking financial help.
Center for Early Relationship Support:
- Work with families during the perinatal period and early childhood, supporting caregiver–infant relationships and the social–emotional development of young children.
- Engagement with vulnerable families, with attention to how trauma influence early parenting and family wellbeing.
- Participation in relationship-based, dyadic, and trauma-informed practice in community settings, grounded in reflective supervision and collaborative team work.
CHAI Disability Services:
- Working with adults diagnosed with mental illness, autism spectrum disorder,intellectual disability, and/or developmental disability.
- Clinical modalities usedinclude motivational interviewing, social casework, psychoeducation, supportive counseling, needs assessment, and more.
- Providing individual case management in the community (Greater Boston area)and in a group residential settings.
Journey to Safety - Domestic Abuse Services:
- Domestic abuse intern advocate, you will use a survivor-centered, trauma-informed approach in working with a diverse cross-section of people from communities across Greater Boston and beyond.
- Direct client contact can be in-person in the community or at our offices in Waltham, virtually, or by phone, depending on client need and safety. A car and valid driver's license or other means of transportation is needed for this internship.
Mental Health Services Helpline:
- Working with the Access team, responding to helpline callers and addressing the needs of the following populations: individuals with mental illness and/or disabling conditions, children and adolescents, parents and other family members, older adults, and other service providers and professionals.
- Providing telephonic support, needs assessment, guidance, and counseling to callers around complex clinical situations, personal and family dynamics, and identified problems.
- Connecting callers to JF&CS programs and external resources, services, and referrals.
- Clinical modalities used include motivational interviewing, social casework, psychoeducation, supportive counseling, needs assessment, and more.
What We Offer
- Internships of 6-12 months, from 16-40 hours per week.
- Paid stipend of up to $2,400 per internship year, depending on weekly hours and length of the internship.
- Field placement supervision by an LICSW (if required by your program).
- Travel reimbursement for client visits.
- Access to training and agency-wide intern seminar program that covers relevant clinical topics.

- Onboarding process may include TB test, medical physical and relevant background checks (CORI, SORI and fingerprint check)
- Applicants must have:
- A reliable car and a clean driving record and/or the ability to travel to different community locations to provide case management., depending on internship areas of focus.

- Ability to attend internship at the JF&CS office in Waltham, MA during 9am-5pm weekday business hours. Internship schedule and hours may be flexible and worked out with internship supervisor, with hybrid work model available.
