Role Overview
The Senior Accountant plays a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and strong internal controls within a complex nonprofit environment. Partnering closely with the Controller and cross-functional leaders, this role supports stewardship of financial resources, including restricted funds and grants, while contributing to audit readiness and continuous process improvement.
This position is well suited for a detail-oriented accounting professional who values mission-driven work and is comfortable balancing technical accounting execution with collaboration and guidance across teams.
Key Responsibilities - Will report directly to the VP/Controller - Excellent candidates will know how to work independently and have the operational wisdom and confidence to know when they can handle something on their own vs running it up the chain - Able to take things off of the VP/Controller's plate without explicit instruction all the time.
Core Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Manage general ledger operations, including complex journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end and year-end close
- Support preparation of GAAP-compliant financial statements (income statement, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Record, review, and reconcile revenue and expense activity, including restricted contributions, in-kind donations, payroll-related entries, accruals, and non-routine transactions
- Maintain accounting for assets and liabilities, including fixed assets, depreciation, leases, prepaids, loans, and contractual obligations
- Review balance sheet activity and investigate discrepancies or risks
Restricted Funds, Grants & Compliance
- Ensure accurate tracking, reporting, and documentation of restricted funds, grants, and private contributions
- Prepare schedules and supporting materials for audits, grant reporting, and compliance reviews
- Assist with annual audit preparation and respond to auditor inquiries
- Ensure adherence to GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and internal financial policies
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Analysis
- Partner with Development, Programs, Facilities, and HR to support accurate and timely financial reporting
- Perform variance analysis and ad hoc financial reporting as needed
- Identify and recommend improvements to accounting processes, controls, and documentation
Leadership & Team Support
- Provide guidance and technical support to accounting staff, as appropriate
- Communicate financial information clearly and professionally to internal stakeholders
- Uphold confidentiality, ethical standards, and organizational policies
- Model professionalism, sound judgment, and respectful communication
Supervisory Responsibilities (as applicable)
- Support hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management of accounting staff
- Delegate work effectively and monitor workloads, deadlines, and performance metrics
- Conduct one-on-one meetings, evaluations, and development planning
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum 3-5 years of progressive accounting or finance experience
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP
- Nonprofit accounting experience preferred; grants and restricted funding experience a plus
- Experience with accounting systems required; NetSuite strongly preferred

Work Environment & Requirements
- In-person role based in the Salt Lake City area; limited hybrid flexibility after onboarding
- Standard business hours, Monday–Friday
- Authorization to work in the U.S. required (no sponsorship)

- Ability to sit, stand, move throughout the workday, and lift up to 15 pounds
