United Way Miami, Inc. is hiring an AVP, Corporate Communications & Executive Affairs to join our team. As an AVP, Corporate Communications & Executive Affairs, you will lead, mentor, and develop the communications team while also developing executive communications, overseeing strategic communications planning, media relations, social media, thought leadership, reputation management, organizational storytelling, and other high-impact content that advances United Way Miami's strategic priorities. This is a hands-on leadership role that combines strategic thinking with active execution.
The Associate Vice President reports to the Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications and provides day-to-day leadership for the communications team, including the Associate Director of Communications, Social Media Manager, and Writer/Copy Editor, fostering a collaborative, high-performing culture grounded in creativity, accountability, and continuous improvement. Through collaboration across departments and external partners, the Associate Vice President enhances United Way Miami's visibility, cultivates authentic storytelling, and helps position the organization as a trusted voice and convener across Miami-Dade.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Corporate Communications:
- Develop and oversee the organization's communications strategy, ensuring alignment across internal, external, donor, volunteer, client, community and board communications.
- Establish annual communications priorities, messaging architecture and content strategy to advance organizational goals and strengthen reputation.
- Lead crisis and issues communications planning in partnership with the Senior Vice President of Marketing & Communications and executive leadership.
- Oversee United Way Miami's social media strategy, ensuring platforms support executive visibility, fundraising, and organizational priorities while maximizing engagement and growth.
Storytelling & Organizational Engagement:
- Lead the organization's Storytellers Summit, equipping staff, donors, volunteers, board members, and clients to effectively communicate and advocate for United Way Miami's mission and impact.
- Enhance storytelling curriculum, toolkits and communications resources that strengthen storytelling capabilities across stakeholder groups.
- Develop a sustainable pipeline of client, volunteer and partner stories that demonstrate the organization's impact and support fundraising, marketing and stakeholder engagement.
Executive Communications & Strategic Counsel:
- In partnership with SVP of Marketing & Communications, develop and execute comprehensive executive communications strategies for the President & CEO and leadership team.
- Serve as strategic communications advisor to leadership, providing counsel on messaging, reputation management, thought leadership, public appearances, media engagement and stakeholder communications.
- Develop executive positioning efforts, including speeches, presentations, talking points, opinion pieces, leadership messaging and external thought leadership opportunities.
Leadership Media Training:
- Design and oversee leadership media training initiatives for executives, board members and key spokespersons.
- Prepare organizational leaders and clients for media interviews, speaking engagements, crisis communications situations, and public appearances.
Reputation & Thought Leadership:
- Lead organizational reputation management strategies and identify opportunities to elevate United Way Miami's visibility and influence.
- Position United Way Miami and its leaders as trusted voices on community impact, philanthropy, education, health and economic mobility.
- Identify strategic speaking, media and thought leadership opportunities that elevate the organization's profile locally and nationally.
Team Leadership & Content Development:
- Lead, mentor and develop the communications team.
- Establish priorities, provide coaching and foster a collaborative, high-performing culture grounded in creativity, accountability and continuous improvement.
- Serve as a working leader by actively writing, editing and producing executive communications, speeches, presentations, media materials, thought leadership pieces and strategic organizational messaging.
- Review and approve communications materials to ensure consistency, quality, brand alignment and strategic messaging across all channels.
- Manage multiple high-priority communications initiatives simultaneously while maintaining exceptional standards for execution and responsiveness.
Requirements:
Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or Journalism; professional experience. Advanced degree preferred.
Experience Requirements: Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience leading corporate communications with a public relations/journalism background. Management experience is a must. Experience writing for both mission-based organizations and CEOs.
Technology Requirement: Microsoft Office suite; Zoom; Asana platform, Sprout Social software and Cision. Strong knowledge of social media platforms.
Other Essential Knowledge/Skills: AP Style grammar; excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience in media/public relations is a must. Highly motivated, organized content producer who is analytical and can formulate content for use across various communications channels. Knowledge of social and digital media and marketing. Approaches/ability to work under pressure while being attentive to details. Comfortable working with a team within a matrixed organization. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
Direct Supervision of Others: Associate Director, Communications; Specialist II, Communications; Social Media/Digital Marketing Manager; co-works with outside partners and vendors, including videographers, social media and public relations.
