Head of Avionics Engineering (NewSpace)

Los Angeles (Onsite) | Full-Time Permanent | $150K–$225K Base + Equity + Bonus + Commission


NewSpace Technical is partnered with an exciting, well-funded NewSpace company developing next-generation technologies for the future of space operations. Following a period of significant growth, the company is looking to appoint a Head of Avionics to lead the architecture, development, qualification, and integration of critical flight electronics across multiple programs.

Overview

We are seeking an experienced avionics engineering leader to own the design, development, qualification, and integration of avionics systems across a portfolio of advanced aerospace products. This individual will serve as the technical authority for avionics architecture and lead a multidisciplinary team responsible for delivering reliable flight hardware.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong leadership skills and has experience taking complex aerospace systems from concept through qualification and operational deployment.


Responsibilities

  • Define system architectures, interfaces, and requirements for avionics subsystems.
  • Lead the design, analysis, testing, qualification, and integration of avionics hardware.
  • Establish verification and qualification strategies aligned with relevant aerospace standards.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and guidance to engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, manufacturing, and systems engineering teams to achieve program objectives.
  • Manage technical risks, schedules, and execution plans related to avionics development.
  • Ensure successful delivery of avionics hardware across multiple programs and product lines.
  • Support system-level integration, troubleshooting, and validation activities.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Several years of experience developing avionics or embedded electronic systems for aerospace or other mission-critical applications.
  • Experience with electronic design automation (EDA) tools and PCB development workflows.
  • Familiarity with embedded computing, communications interfaces, instrumentation, sensors, and power electronics.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative engineering environment.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Extensive experience leading development of aerospace avionics systems.
  • Demonstrated ownership of hardware throughout the complete product lifecycle, including design, analysis, qualification, integration, and operations.
  • Understanding of environmental and reliability considerations for aerospace electronics, including radiation effects.
  • Experience planning and executing environmental test campaigns such as thermal, vibration, and shock testing.
  • Previous technical leadership or engineering management experience.
