POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Think Tank is a woman-owned small business with more than 27 years of proven success delivering exceptional marine and fisheries services to the federal government. We are currently seeking an ideal candidate for the position of Tagging Specialist to support an upcoming proposal with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Résumé of successful candidate(s) will be included with our proposal.
The Tagging Specialist will be responsible for deploying, maintaining, and managing tagging operations for marine mammals and sea turtles using various telemetry technologies. This role supports behavioral, ecological, and migratory studies across multiple projects under the Protected Species Division.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Deploy VHF, satellite, acoustic, flipper PIT and suction-cup tags on protected species using approved handling methods.
- Track animals in real-time and retrieve tag data post-deployment.
- Assist in the design, maintenance, and testing of tag equipment.
- Process, analyze, and archive telemetry data for ecological modeling and research use.
- Maintain logs, permits, and metadata associated with tag deployments.
- Participate in fieldwork, including supporting small boat operations during tagging missions.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in marine biology, animal science, or related discipline.
- Demonstrated field experience with marine animal capture, handling, and tagging.
- Familiarity with telemetry technologies (e.g., SPLASH tags, VHF receivers, acoustic transceivers).
- Knowledge of data analysis tools (e.g., Argos, VEMCO, Wildlife Computers, R) preferred.
- Valid US passport and ability to work at sea or in remote field locations.
- Small boat experience and/or NOAA Small Boat certification a plus
