Job Description
Job DescriptionProject Engineer – Thermal Management
Job Type: 12-Month Contract
Location: Remote
Overview
Our client is a leading force in the renewable energy sector, driving the transition to a sustainable future. They are seeking a seasoned Project Engineer specializing in Thermal Management for Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). This is a critical contract role where you will provide engineering leadership on utility-scale energy storage projects from initial design through commissioning and handover.
You will act as the technical authority on thermal systems, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and reliability of large-scale BESS installations. This role offers the opportunity to shape standards, develop best practices, and directly impact the success of cutting-edge renewable energy infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate thermal design aspects of major components (chillers, HVAC, liquid cooling systems, etc.) for utility-scale energy storage projects.
- Develop and prepare technical scopes of work for thermal management studies, analyses, and detailed designs for incorporation into engineering and construction contracts.
- Provide full lifecycle project support from conception through commissioning, including potential on-site commissioning activities for critical projects.
- Serve as the primary engineering guide for project teams and provide oversight of external Engineers of Record (EOR).
- Collaborate directly with equipment suppliers and vendors on thermal system sizing, controls strategy, technology compatibility, and system integration.
- Partner with multi-disciplined internal teams (electrical, civil, controls, project management) on complex problem-solving, system integration, and continuous process improvement.
- Identify lessons learned, develop and implement process improvements, and create tools/standards to maximize BESS performance and reliability.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Advanced degree is a plus.
- 5+ years of progressive engineering experience, with a significant portion focused on thermal/fluid systems design, analysis, or project engineering.
- Proven experience with thermal management of Lithium-Ion battery systems, preferably in utility-scale or large commercial/industrial energy storage applications.
- Strong background in evaluating and specifying major thermal components (e.g., chillers, pumps, heat exchangers, cooling towers, ductwork).
- Experience developing technical specifications, scopes of work, and providing engineering oversight for EORs and contractors.
- Familiarity with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, NFPA, IEC).
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with a customer-service mindset for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote, cross-functional team environment.
Contract & Benefits
- Remote Flexibility: This role is eligible for 100% remote work.
- Engaging Project: Work on high-visibility, utility-scale projects that are critical to the energy transition.
- Professional Growth: Opportunity to develop standards and tools that will be used across a leading renewable energy portfolio.
- Streamlined Process: Weekly pay and support from a dedicated recruiting team.
