Outline of the role

The Shipping Assistant supports daily shipping and logistics operations in a manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for preparing, packaging, and documenting outgoing shipments, ensuring orders are accurate, on time, and compliant with company and carrier requirements. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, organized, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced production setting.

Key responsibilities and tasks

  • Input and edit shipping functions producing Interplant Delivery Tickets and Bills of Lading
  • Generate and process shipping documents such as packing slips, bills of lading, and shipping labels
  • Run Backorders
  • Split Deliveries for shipment
  • File Deliveries
  • Submit ASN’s
  • Work with Inside Sales on Backorders and late Deliveries
  • Help Enter Trip Sheets for trucks
  • Prepare and package finished good for shipment according to company standards
  • Load and unload shipments manually or with material-handling equipment (e.g. forklift or crane)
  • All other duties as directed buy the Shipping Supervisor, Logistics Manager, or Plant Manager

Required work skills

  • 1-3 years of experience in shipping, warehouse, or manufacturing environment required
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with shipping or inventory systems
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Problem solving
  • Steel product knowledge preferred
  • Microsoft Excel ability
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical skills
  • Belief in teamwork
  • SAP knowledge preferred, but not required

Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment can be loud at times. Environment is not fully climate controlled.
