Position Details

Location: Sussex Campus Hospital

Status: Full Time (80 Hours)

General Overview

The Hematologist-Oncologist plays a crucial role in delivering care and medical oversight for patients with malignant diseases and hematologic disorders. This position requires strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with other medical professionals, ensuring high-quality services are provided. The Hematologist-Oncologist will represent our Oncology Service Line to both medical staff and the community while delivering oncology services based on established guidelines in a timely manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver oncology services in accordance with evidence-based guidelines, ensuring timely completion of all related documentation as per organizational policy.
  • Engage with newly diagnosed cancer patients or those with benign hematology conditions to discuss treatment processes. Provide education to patients and their families about the disease, diagnostic procedures, tests, labs, and treatment goals. Set realistic objectives and potential outcomes for patients, and communicate the treatment plan with team members (including Nurse Practitioners, RN Chemotherapy, and RN Navigators) while overseeing the execution of the treatment plan.
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team (including surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology) to develop patient care plans. Advocate for best practices and guidelines-driven care during multidisciplinary conferences, and communicate the care plan to relevant team members (e.g., Primary Care).
  • Gather and analyze pertinent patient healthcare data to assess needs. Follow organizational policies for documentation, diagnosis coding, and accurate charge capture.
  • Participate in the Clinical Research Program by recommending potential clinical studies for patient enrollment on-site or referring to appropriate tertiary settings.
  • Coordinate with Oncology Administration to enhance departmental workflows and actively contribute to the development of the Oncology Service Line strategic plan, promoting its vision and goals within the community.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Qualifications

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Completion of a recognized internal medicine residency and a hematology-oncology fellowship is required.
  • Credentials: Must possess a Physician MD or DO license, Controlled Substance Registration, and be eligible for active membership in our medical staff.
  • Experience:
    • Required: No prior experience necessary; must be board eligible in hematology and oncology.
    • Preferred: Board certification in hematology and oncology.
