Job Title: Blood Bank Technologist
Responsibilities
- Perform qualitative and quantitative analysis on all specimens received in the laboratory for the assigned station, with a primary focus on blood bank testing.
- Conduct testing in hematology, including urinalysis, coagulation studies, and spinal fluid counts, in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
- Apply a thorough understanding of the principles behind all tests performed and maintain working knowledge of all equipment used in the assigned station.
- Ensure that all specimens are properly labeled and placed into appropriate storage conditions to maintain specimen integrity.
- Follow all quality control policies and procedures to ensure accurate, reliable, and reproducible patient results.
- Recognize critical or life-threatening test results, verify their accuracy, and promptly report them to the appropriate clinician or care team.
- Accurately document and verify all test results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS) in a timely manner.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety policies and regulatory standards while handling specimens, reagents, and equipment.
- Participate in ongoing efforts to support the rebuilding and continuous improvement of the laboratory’s operations and services.
- Collaborate with colleagues and leadership to maintain an efficient workflow and support a culture of quality, accuracy, and accountability.
Essential Skills
- Active New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist license or valid permit issued by the New York State Department of Education for Clinical Laboratory Technology.
- Prior blood bank experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
- Ability and willingness to work an overnight shift from 12:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m., including rotating weekends.
- Proficiency in performing blood bank testing and related laboratory procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and instrumentation used in blood bank, hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, and spinal fluid analysis.
- Ability to recognize, verify, and appropriately escalate critical or life-threatening test results.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling, testing, and result documentation in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Commitment to following quality control policies, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Effective communication skills to interact with clinicians and laboratory colleagues regarding test results and laboratory processes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- ASCP certification is preferred but not required if the candidate holds a full New York State Medical Laboratory Technologist license.
- Experience working as a Medical Technologist, Med Tech, or Medical Laboratory Technologist in a hospital or clinical laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with clinical laboratory workflows, including blood bank, hematology, and general laboratory operations.
- Interest in professional growth and upward mobility within the laboratory setting.
- Ability to adapt to a laboratory that is undergoing development and improvement, contributing positively to process enhancements.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage workload efficiently on an overnight schedule.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brooklyn, NY.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $58.00/hr.
