The position is required to acquire and maintain an in-depth understanding of the needs of each outpatient oncology clinical and non-clinical area utilizing the BCC EMR (Cerner). EMR Nurse will have an in-depth understanding of the existing clinical and non-clinical workflows and interrelationship of current and potential EMR functionality. EMR Nurse will coordinate all BCC EMR “super users” to ensure that the same information is flowing to and from this group and their staff members. EMR Nurse will liaise with IT Dept’s Clinical Informaticists, Application Analyst and others as needed and will work closely with the BCC team including Pharmacy and others to provide input into the BCC’s utilization of the EMR, including opportunities for streamlining, improving workflow, patient safety, and outcomes with best practices. As well as directly supporting clinical staff in determining system requirements, adapting clinical workflows to adopt technology, understand system functionality required to support and improve the clinical process.

The EMR Nurse role advises IT Team on development of new or enhanced functionality based on best clinical practice. The EMR Nurse role has a thorough understanding of all application functionality, reporting capabilities, interfacing and integration of each clinical applications as it relates to Oncology workflows.

EMR Nurse position will be responsible for working closely with the Pharmacy and pharmacy informatics team to create new or modify existing chemotherapy regimens.

This position, in collaboration with Oncology RN Educator, will be responsible for designing onboarding of new users for oncology-specific workflows and functionality.

Additionally, this position will liaise closely with BCC leadership to apprise them of opportunities for EMR improvement, as well as to be kept apprised of operational changes including, e.g., additions of clinic locations, additions of providers, etc.

Essential Functions

  • Applies Oncology RN experience and insights into gaining and maintaining knowledge of clinical practices. Assists individual Super Users with their needs.
  • Assists and collaborates with others in determining “best use” of EMR technology and functionality.
  • Identifies opportunities to leverage technology to improve clinical workflow.
  • Recommends “best use” practices; works with individual area super users to gauge needs, ensure appropriate and consistent communications with all users in those areas.
  • Works cooperatively with IT (Clinical Informaticist, Application Analyst and others), Outpatient Oncology Super Users, Oncology RN Educator, BCC leadership (provider and non-provider), and others.
  • Provides onboarding assistance for nursing and support staff in oncology specific EMR functionality and oncology workflows.
  • Expected to follow professional oncology nursing standards and competencies in that area.
  • Supports departmental (nursing, ancillary) in training staff on clinical technology processes and requires a detailed knowledge of the electronic health record and the ability to analyze processes/systems as they impact the organizations’ strategic initiatives and patient experience.
  • Acts as a liaison between technical staff and end users in creating and refining business/EHR requirements
  • Proactively communicates and collaborates with internal and external customers to analyze information needs and functional requirements and delivery.
  • Adheres to all Security Standards as set forth by the organization and National guidelines.
  • Performs testing and training on system changes, upgrades, and enhanced functionality.
  • Works closely with Clinical Leadership and other stakeholder teams to design, implement and support the goals and objectives of the organization set by the leadership.
  • Works closely with Clinical Informaticist, Applications Analysts, departments, and technical teams to create and maintain appropriate application and workflow documentation.

Job Requirements

(Education, Experience, Licensure and Certification)

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited/approved school of nursing
  • BSN or a clinical degree or equivalent education and experience is required.
  • Master’s degree preferred.

Licensure

  • Current unrestricted Kentucky license (required)

Certification

  • OCN certification (preferred)
  • Informatics certificate (preferred).

Job Competency

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities critical to this role:

  • 5 + years of prior experience in a healthcare environment supporting revenue cycle and or clinical operations is required.
  • 2 + years’ experience with a healthcare EMR is required.
  • Cerner implementation and or support experience preferred.

Language Ability

  • Example: Must be able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.

Reasoning Ability

  • Example: Able to critically think through complex patient situations, process improvements, evidence-based practice.
