Position Summary
The Mechanical Maintenance Planner is responsible for developing and coordinating detailed maintenance plans and schedules for mechanical equipment in a mining environment. This role ensures equipment reliability and availability through effective preventative, corrective, and shutdown maintenance planning while maintaining compliance with safety and operational standards.
Job Responsibilities
Reporting to the Coordinator – Mine Maintenance, the Mechanical Planner will be responsible for the following:
- Develop short-range (weekly) and long-range (monthly/quarterly) maintenance plans for mobile and fixed plant assets.
- Create detailed job plans including scope of work, labor requirements, parts, tools, and estimated durations.
- Coordinate maintenance schedules with Operations to minimize production impact.
- Ensure maintenance work aligns with OEM recommendations, site standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Prepare contingency plans for unplanned breakdowns and critical equipment failures.
- Supervise and coordinate maintenance crews, contractors, and support personnel as required.
- Assign work orders, monitor job progress, and ensure tasks are completed safely and on schedule.
- Conduct pre-task briefs and post-job debriefs to reinforce safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Provide on-the-job coaching, mentoring, and performance feedback to maintenance personnel.
- Verify work quality and ensure equipment is returned to service fit for purpose.
- Lead and enforce safe work practices, including lockout/tagout, isolation, and job hazard analysis.
- Ensure compliance with site safety systems, regulatory requirements, and environmental standards.
- Participate in incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Promote a strong safety culture where hazards, near misses, and improvement opportunities are reported and addressed.
- Monitor equipment performance, downtime trends, and maintenance history.
- Support or lead root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and reliability improvement initiatives.
- Identify opportunities to improve maintenance strategies (preventive, predictive, condition-based).
- Drive continuous improvement in maintenance planning accuracy, schedule compliance, and execution quality.
- Coordinate with Supply Chain/Warehouse to ensure availability of parts, materials, and tooling.
- Review and validate parts usage and maintenance costs.
- Support cost control by optimizing labor utilization, minimizing rework, and reducing unplanned downtime.
- Provide input to maintenance budgets, forecasts, and capital planning as required.
- Utilize the site CMMS to plan, schedule, track, and close work orders accurately.
- Ensure maintenance records, job plans, and equipment histories are complete and up to date.
- Track and report KPIs such as:
- Schedule compliance
- Equipment availability and reliability
- Planned vs. unplanned work ratio
- Maintenance backlog
- Prepare reports and present maintenance performance to leadership.
- Work closely with Operations, Engineering, Safety, and Supply Chain to align maintenance activities with site priorities.
- Support commissioning, shutdowns, rebuilds, and major maintenance events.
- Participate in operational planning meetings and contribute to site improvement initiatives.
Skills and Qualifications
- Proficient in CMMS software (e.g., SAP, Pronto, Oracle).
- Strong understanding of mining equipment, maintenance practices, and reliability principles.
- Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
- Knowledge of safety and environmental regulations in mining operations.
Education
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance planning, preferably in the mining or heavy industrial sector.
- Experience with both mobile and fixed plant equipment is preferred.
Physical Requirements
- Exposure to loud noise, dust, heavy machinery, and uneven terrain.
- Some lifting and strength are required when working in a plant.
- Must be available to work shifts, weekends, callouts and company mandated overtime.
Salary
- $110,000 - $125,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
