Functional Medicine Medical Assistant Responsibilities

* Show interest in and enthusiasm for this unique approach to health & wellness

* Carry out activities that support the provider in ensuring a smooth work-flow

* Be willing to learn the basics of various Functional Medicine specialty labs (i.e. why they are done) and instruct patients on how to complete them

* “Visit Prep” for patients 48 hours in advance of visits. Visit prepping includes the following:

* Check each chart to ensure that visit paperwork was completed at least 48 hours prior to the visit (paperwork includes the New Patient Intake and MSQ forms)

* If forms have not been completed, reach out to the patient via phone call to remind them to please complete these forms as soon as possible

* On the day of the visit, room patients in a timely manner. Rooming includes:

* Obtaining any paperwork that has not already been completed

* Obtaining vital signs per usual protocol

* Communicating to the clinician of any patient concerns or questions that may arise prior to the actual visit

* Following the visit, assist the clinician with the following duties, if applicable:

* Provide the patient with educational handouts and other forms

* Help assist the patient in completing any bloodwork

* If ordered, provide and explain to patients how to complete specialty labs as well as the company’s direct contact with any questions

* Place orders for supplements if recommended and/or assist the patient with purchasing supplements that are stocked in house

* Assist patients in scheduling follow up appointments with the clinician, dietician, or other providers

* In between seeing patients, duties may include:

* Answering patient questions that arise between visits

* This may include consulting with the clinician if a simple or limited question or advising the patient to schedule a visit to address (a clinical decision tree will be provided to the MA to help with this)

* Checking specialty lab portals daily, downloading any new results into the patient’s chart, and notifying the clinician that the result is available

* Forwarding to patients their specialty lab results when available

* Prepping for upcoming visits (i.e. ensuring forms have been completed)

* Queuing supplement and/or medication refills for clinicians

* Checking on supplement or testing kit inventory and communicating with the Inventory Manager when more supplies are needed

* Ability to travel between locations, as needed.

Requirements:

Functional Medicine aims to determine why and how disease occurs. These visits tend to be longer than other medical visits, which allows time for the provider to assess a patient’s lifestyle, environment, and genetic factors that contribute to disease. As such, the job roles for a Medical Assistant in Functional Medicine are unique in some ways. We are looking for a Medical Assistant who is excited about joining our Functional Medicine clinicians!


Essential Functions and Qualifications

* Punctuality and adherence to schedule is a must.

* Completion of Medical Assistant program from an accredited institute.

* Medical Assistant program diploma.

* Certification is required (CMA) (RMA) (CCMA)

* Knowledge of medical terminology.

* Ability to lift 25 pounds.

* Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

* Ability to work in an upright, standing position for extended periods of time.

* Manual dexterity.

* Work is performed in a medical office setting using standard medical equipment.

* The risk of exposure to blood and body fluids is present.
