Summary:
Scope
The Medical Surgical Manager oversees the daily operations of the medical-surgical unit, ensuring high-quality patient care, regulatory compliance, and efficient resource utilization. This role is responsible for managing staff performance, fostering professional development, and maintaining a safe and patient-centered environment.

- Budget Development

Staff Development
- Evaluate Competencies
Completion of annual performance review by established deadline.
- Provide training/educational opportunities
Staff completion of training/educational opportunities.
Human Resource Management
- Staffing – retain qualified staff
Identify and implement individualized recognition techniques.
- Interviewing/Hiring Competent Staff
Utilize objective, behavioral-based interview questions to interview, evaluate, and hire staff.
- Orientation
Completion of facility and departmental new hire orientation checklists.
- Evaluation completed annually
Annual performance reviews completed by the established deadline.
- Goal development
SMART goals established for staff that support the OMC Strategic Plan.
- Use performance improvement techniques effectively for low-performing employees
Develop, implement, and document performance improvement plan and progress.
- Succession Planning
Identify and begin the development plan for internal staff as appropriate.
Leadership
- Participation in OMC activities
Volunteering and encouraging staff members to volunteer at OMC events as evidenced by supporting documentation.
- Strategic planning involvement at organizational and departmental level
Actively participates in the development of the OMC Strategic Plan and departmental goals that support the plan as evidenced by goal documentation.
- Maintain Emotional Intelligence – ability to perceive and evaluate the emotions of others and effectively manage one’s own emotions.

- In-depth understanding of medical-surgical nursing practices and standards.
- Knowledge of hospital policies, regulatory requirements (e.g., DNV), and patient safety protocols.
- Familiarity with budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation in a healthcare setting.
- Understanding of performance improvement methodologies and quality metrics.
- Knowledge of human resource principles, including recruitment, retention, and staff development.
- Awareness of healthcare technology and electronic health record systems.

Qualifications:
- Currently licensed in the state of Wisconsin as a Registered Nurse in good standing
- Current BLS certification
- Previous experience working within a hospital environment
- Meets OMC health requirements
