We are seeking a board-eligible or board-certified Addiction Medicine Psychiatrist to join our team at a prominent medical center in New York City. This role focuses on delivering outpatient addiction and opioid treatment services grounded in evidence-based methodologies. Responsibilities include diagnosing and managing substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions, overseeing medication management, educating patients, and collaborating with a diverse healthcare team. Additionally, the position entails teaching duties and involvement in quality assurance initiatives, emphasizing patient-centered and culturally competent care within a large urban public health framework.

Our organization is looking to expand its team by adding an Addiction Medicine Psychiatrist at our state-of-the-art medical facility. Located in a safe and appealing residential area of the Bronx, just 20 minutes from Manhattan, this facility is a Level 1 Trauma Center affiliated with a teaching institution. It provides a comprehensive range of inpatient and outpatient services across various medical and surgical specialties, including Psychiatry. The Psychiatry Department features 89 adult acute inpatient beds, a Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), a Consultation/Liaison Service, an Adult Ambulatory Practice, and a Community-Based Assertive Treatment Program. Key Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of the Medical Director of Addiction Services, deliver clinical care in the outpatient addiction clinic and opioid treatment program.
  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations and substance use histories, including biopsychosocial assessments.
  • Diagnose substance use disorders and non-substance-related addiction issues, recommending appropriate treatment based on care criteria.
  • Identify mental health and medical conditions associated with addiction treatment.
  • Manage and prescribe medications for addiction treatment, including those for opioid and alcohol use disorders.
  • Oversee pharmacotherapeutic interventions for co-occurring disorders as clinically necessary.
  • Administer medications in compliance with established policies and regulations.
  • Provide education on opioid overdose prevention, naloxone training, and distribute harm reduction resources to patients and their families.
  • Review and act on lab results and medical data promptly.
  • Facilitate care coordination and make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Build therapeutic relationships with patients, utilizing motivational interviewing and enhancement therapy to support their treatment and recovery.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect patient rights.
  • Communicate effectively and regularly with the multidisciplinary treatment team, sharing ongoing assessments and insights.
  • Identify clinical issues and recommend treatment goals, objectives, and interventions with expected timelines.
  • Monitor patient progress and evaluate the appropriateness of continued treatment and care levels.
  • Contribute to the development of Treatment Plans and Utilization Reviews.
  • Participate in daily team meetings, scheduled staff gatherings, case conferences, and departmental Grand Rounds.
  • Ensure a safe and quality-focused environment for patient care by adhering to all policies and procedures.
  • Assess emergency situations, including suicide risk, and take appropriate actions according to established protocols.
  • Engage in medical and behavioral emergency codes as required.
  • Complete incident reports and participate in investigations and improvement recommendations.
  • Educate and mentor fellows, residents, and medical students in addiction services, preparing didactic presentations as necessary.
  • Assist in orienting new physicians and staff within addiction services.
  • Follow clinical standards as outlined by relevant policies and ensure timely and accurate documentation of visits.
  • Support medical leadership in Quality Assurance and Process Improvement initiatives as needed.
  • Provide coverage for other physicians in addiction services when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Board Eligible or Board Certified in Psychiatry.
  • Subspecialty Board Certification in Addiction Medicine (ABAM) or Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) (current or expected within four years).
  • Valid medical license to practice in New York State.
  • Active DEA Registration, including a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine (current or expected within six months).
  • Minimum of one year of education, training, or experience in substance use disorder services.

Compensation and Benefits:

The annual base salary is set at $267,900* for board-eligible candidates and $278,200* for board-certified candidates, based on a 40-hour work week. Additional compensation may be available for extra call or sessional/per diem hours.

The estimated total annual compensation package is approximately $438,690** for board-eligible and $450,020** for board-certified candidates, which includes the base salary, 401(k) contributions, sessional/per diem hours, and other factors outlined below:

  • Estimated annual earnings for 10 additional sessional/per diem hours worked weekly is $104,000***.
  • Potential bonuses of up to $40,000 (based on previous year’s averages), contingent upon meeting quality and productivity benchmarks.
  • 401(k) Company Contributions (subject to IRS limits):
    • Employees are immediately vested in a 3% company contribution of base earnings, with no employee match required.
    • After one year of service, an additional 7% company contribution of base earnings is provided, with no employee match required.
  • Annual reimbursement for Continuing Medical Education (CME).
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) policy, including vacation, sick leave, holidays, and CME days.
  • Comprehensive Medical, Prescription, and Dental Coverage: Premium plans with employee contributions significantly below market rates.
  • Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Coverage: Equal to twice your salary (up to a maximum of $300,000) at no cost to you.

  • This role is eligible for the High Needs Specialty Loan Repayment Program (HNSLRP) for qualifying physicians.
