Job Summary:
We are seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters to provide on-site interpreting services to Deaf and Hard of Hearing (HoH) personnel at NSWCCD. Interpreters will support communication between staff by facilitating understanding via ASL, transliteration, and sight translation, as needed. This is an on-site, contract-based opportunity focused on scheduled and anticipated interpreting needs.
Key Responsibilities:

Provide in-person ASL interpretation at the Combatant Craft Division (Virginia Beach).

Interpret using ASL, Pidgin Sign English (PSE), Manually Coded English (MCE), and other modalities as required.

Support communication in meetings, training, and other workplace interactions.

Voice interpret when a Deaf/HoH person’s speech is not easily understood.

Collaborate with a second interpreter when sessions exceed 30 minutes.

Provide confirmation of interpreter assignment and credentials at least 3 business days prior to scheduled events.

Maintain strict confidentiality and professional ethical standards.
Required Qualifications:

Native or near-native fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English.

Minimum of 3 years of professional ASL interpreting experience.

Proficient in voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice interpreting.

Certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and in good standing with the Code of Professional Conduct (CPC).

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to convey tone, nuance, and context.

Ability to keep pace with rapid conversational English.

Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain access to Carderock Division facilities (CAC badge eligibility).
Security Requirements:
All interpreters must be U.S. Citizens and authorized for base access (CAC credentials required).
