SUMMARY: The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner works as an integral part of the Clinical Team. The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner will perform, but is not limited to, the following duties: evaluates physiological, neurological and psychopharmacological status of consumers, assessing the need for, prescribing and monitoring of medications. This position may require a flexible schedule including 1st and 2nd shifts and Saturdays. The agency has the right to change shifts based on the needs of the organization.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Position Specific Duties
- Evaluate physiological, neurological, and psychopharmacological status of consumers.
- Assess the need for medications, prescribe and monitor for consumers suffering from mental health, substance abuse disorders and co-occurring diagnoses.
- Provide a wide range of primary, acute, and specialty services.
- Record and examine the medical history, diagnoses, and symptoms of consumers.
- Participate in psychiatric formulations.
- Provide direct psychotherapy when indicated.
- Educate consumers on preventive care and prescribed medications.
- Provide case consultations when indicated.
- Participate in utilization review or quality-assurance activity of all records.
- Maintain timely, accurate, and complete case notes for consumer records.
- Maintain an ongoing awareness of consumer's mental status, adding additional services to maintain a therapeutic level of care as needs change.
- Ability to climb three flights of stairs to deal with emergencies.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations by placing calls to Fire, Rescue, Police, and Medical, etc.
Administrative Tasks:
- Complete all required documentation in a timely manner.
- Perform program recordkeeping and filing, and organize vital documents.
- Provide telephone coverage for the assigned program and direct calls to other programs as needed.
- Participate in required supervisions, staff meetings and trainings.
- Participate and cooperate in any investigations conducted by internal and external agencies.
- Ability to use a computer including inputting information into the electronic health record.
Compliance Requirements:
- Remain awake during your shift at all times.
- Attend all mandatory trainings and update all licenses and certifications.
- Adhere to program/project/department requirements and services.
- Comply with established protocol for medication management/distribution.
- Follow all reporting guidelines by deadlines including the completion of a Confidential Incident Report.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner must perform each essential function satisfactorily. The qualifications listed below are representative of the knowledge/skill and/or ability required.
- Advanced practice degree from an accredited college or university.
- Required current prescriptive authority and DEA number in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
- Current and unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse/Advanced Practicing Nurse in Massachusetts.
- Three years' experience in community health settings providing direct services.
- Meet continuing education requirements to satisfy regulatory, accreditation, and agency requirements and ensure continued professional growth and knowledge of current trends.
- Good working knowledge of computers, electronic health records and data collection.
- Requires valid driver's license due to business-related travel.
