Position Summary
The Dishwasher / Kitchen Steward is responsible for maintaining a clean, organized, and sanitary kitchen while supporting the culinary team with basic food preparation and other kitchen duties as assigned. This position plays an essential role in ensuring smooth kitchen operations and may assist with prep work, receiving deliveries, stocking, and general kitchen maintenance based on business needs.
Essential Responsibilities
Dishwashing & Sanitation
- Wash, rinse, sanitize, and properly store dishes, glassware, utensils, cookware, and kitchen equipment.
- Operate commercial dishwashing equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain clean and organized dish and pot washing areas.
- Empty trash and recycling and replace liners as needed.
- Clean floors, drains, mats, walls, and work surfaces throughout each shift.
- Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations.
- Assist with end-of-day cleaning and kitchen closing procedures.
Food Preparation Support
- Wash, peel, chop, slice, and portion fruits and vegetables.
- Prepare basic ingredients according to recipes and chef instructions.
- Assist with portioning proteins and preparing simple menu items when trained.
- Label, date, and properly store prepared foods using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures.
- Replenish ingredients and supplies at kitchen stations.
- Assist with organizing walk-in coolers, freezers, and dry storage.
Kitchen Support
- Receive and organize deliveries.
- Stock shelves, coolers, and storage areas.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen equipment and workstations.
- Assist cooks during busy service periods as directed.
- Report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
- Support inventory organization and rotation.
Additional Duties
This position is intended to be flexible. Employees may be asked to perform additional kitchen, cleaning, food preparation, stocking, or operational duties as assigned to support the needs of the restaurant. Responsibilities may change based on staffing levels, business demands, or operational requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
- Previous restaurant or kitchen experience is helpful but not required.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong attention to cleanliness and organization.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Willingness to learn food preparation techniques and kitchen operations.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Frequently bend, reach, twist, and kneel.
- Work in hot, wet, and fast-paced conditions.
- Safely use cleaning chemicals and commercial kitchen equipment.

Work Environment
This position works in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to heat, steam, water, cleaning chemicals, sharp objects, and commercial kitchen equipment. Evening, weekend, and holiday availability may be required.
