NASA’s Air Traffic Management & Safety (ATMS) project is transforming today’s aviation system by enabling faster, safer, and more resilient operations through automation and digital services. This role provides deep operational expertise to design, assess, and validate AI advisory capabilities, digital trajectory management workflows/APIs, and autonomous operations performance requirements that integrate seamlessly with ATC and NAS operations. The SME will lead human‑in‑the‑loop evaluations, requirements development, and stakeholder coordination that directly support FAA modernization initiatives (e.g., SMART, CAP, FMDS, BNATCS).
Job Responsibilities
- AI Advisory Agent Development & Assessment: Support concept development and evaluation of advisory agents, including CRA, ADA, NDP, and congestion prediction.
- Digital Trajectory Management & APIs: Contribute to API design, digital clearance workflows, and machine‑readable formats.
- Autonomous Operations Requirements: Define requirements for digital clearances, hazard detection, GNSS‑resilient navigation, and autonomous contingency management.
- Stakeholder Coordination: Support FAA programs (SMART, CAP, FMDS, BNATCS), RTCA committees, and industry partners.
- Simulation & Test Campaigns: Execute simulation campaigns, collect/analyze human‑in‑the‑loop data, and assess mixed operations.
- Deliverables: Monthly reports, technical analysis reports, requirements documentation, evidence packages, and coordination materials.
Required Education/Skills
- 20+ years of air traffic control experience and 10+ years in airspace redesign/modernization.
- Knowledge of ATC procedures, NAS operations, autonomous systems, and safety assurance methods.
- Familiarity with RTCA/SAE standards development and FAA modernization programs.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; proficiency in MS Office/Office 365.
- Experience with aviation simulation and modeling methodologies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
