Position Title: Senior Vice President, Development
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Position: Full-Time, Hybrid. Exempt
Location: New York, NY (preferred) or willing to relocate
Salary: $190,000 – $240,000, plus benefits and performance-based incentives

The Role
The Senior Vice President (SVP), Development is responsible for leading and expanding GMHC’s fundraising operations to meet current and future organizational goals. Reporting to the CFO, the SVP will oversee a growing development team and serve as a key strategic partner in achieving a five-year revenue growth plan—from $7 million annually to $12–$15 million.
The SVP will lead a multi-channel fundraising strategy with a focus on special events, corporate partnerships, major gifts ($5,000+), planned giving, and foundation support. This is a highly visible leadership role that requires a blend of strategic thinking, data-driven decision-making, donor engagement, and team management.
Impact Areas
Fundraising Strategy & Revenue Growth
- Design and lead a comprehensive development strategy to grow revenue from $7M to $10M and ultimately $12–15M within five years.
- Strengthen existing revenue streams while identifying new opportunities for diversified, sustainable support.
- Build systems and infrastructure to support long-term fundraising performance and donor retention.
Special Events & Donor Engagement
- Lead the vision and execution of high-impact fundraising events that drive both revenue and visibility.
- Partner across departments and with board members to activate donor networks and event attendance.
- Ensure consistent, compelling donor communications that align with GMHC’s refreshed brand and community voice.
Major Gifts, Sponsorships & Planned Giving
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals and prospects, with a focus on five-, six-, and seven-figure gifts.
- Oversee a growing planned giving program and ensure effective strategies for long-term legacy support.
- Expand and deepen corporate and foundation partnerships, including event sponsorships and programmatic grants.
Leadership & Team Development
- Supervise and support a dedicated development team, fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and inclusive work culture.
- Partner with the CFO, Executive Team and Board of Directors to elevate fundraising capabilities across the organization.
- Serve as a visible, engaged member of the executive leadership team.
Organizational Alignment & Brand Momentum
- Leverage GMHC’s investment in brand realignment and increased public awareness to enhance fundraising outreach and impact.
- Align development goals with marketing and communications efforts to support consistent messaging and engagement.
- Champion a mission-driven, equity-centered approach to philanthropy and relationship-building.
Requirements
- Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible fundraising leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit organization with a national or regional footprint.
- Demonstrated success leading a complex special events portfolio; ideally having led seven-figure peer to peer portfolios.
- Proven track record of securing and managing major gifts, event sponsorships, and planned gifts.
- Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate, mentor, and grow a high-functioning team.
- Strategic thinker with hands-on ability to execute and deliver results.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, roll-up-your-sleeves culture.
- Passion for GMHC’s mission and a deep appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, both internally and externally.
- Based in or willing to relocate to New York City.
