Job Summary
Provides medical evaluations and treatment for adult and adolescent patients seen in our SMART clinic (Sexual Medicine, Acute Rapid Treatment Clinic) for acute or urgent health concerns. Uses their expertise in primary and urgent care, sexual health, HIV care, and addiction medicine to provide high-quality health care and medical education. Collaborates within a healthcare team to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. Comfortable working with diverse patients and staff. Provides services in accordance with Whitman-Walker Health’s mission.
Role Specific Primary Essential Duties:
- Responsible for SMART clinic staffing and daily operations.
- Supervises SMART providers, supervisors, and coordinators.
- Develops and maintains policies and procedures to support efficient care delivery within the SMART clinic.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Oversees and supports an integrated, team-based approach to clinical care.
- Collaborates with providers and support staff in the provision of patient care.
- Ensures the quality of care meets national guidelines and works in conjunction with the Population Health Quality Department to assure and improve quality on an ongoing basis.
- Is an active participant in interdepartmental meetings and managers’ meetings, representing the SMART department.
- Participates in the creation and implementation of in-service training and educational outreach to the community on a range of healthcare-related issues.
- Provides urgent and same-day care focused on sick visits. Conditions may include, but are not limited to, cold and flu symptoms, allergies, bronchitis, asthma exacerbations, pink eye, sinus infections, urinary tract infections, sore throats, minor injuries such as lacerations and sprains, rashes, minor burns, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and concussion evaluations.
- Performs additional diagnostic and/or therapeutic clinical procedures as necessary.
- Provides acute same-day sexual medicine care, including but not limited to the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, HIV prevention (PEP and PrEP), and the treatment of patients newly diagnosed with HIV with referral into longitudinal care at WWH.
- Supports the Community Health PrEP clinic by acting as the Medical PrEP Liaison.
- Coordinates with Community Health to ensure appropriate STI screening, treatment, and reporting.
- Provides same-day care and initiation of treatment for opioid use disorder with referral into longitudinal care at WWH.
- Maintains a small panel of continuity patients for which they provide general primary care.
- Ensures coordinated medical, behavioral health, addiction, legal, and nutritional care in a medical home model.
- Ensures accurate and timely documentation of services in the Electronic Medical Record in accordance with Medicare and other payer rules and requirements.
- Ensures proper coding of visits using Medicare and other insurance standards.
- Collaborates with external healthcare facilities to facilitate access to specialty and inpatient care.
- Work is integrated between all WWH departments and outside agencies as clinically appropriate.
Budget Responsibilities
Responsible for the SMART Department budget, including relevant grant management.

Responsible for the management of the SMART Department team members
Education and Experience Required
- Master’s Degree or Doctorate Degree in Advanced Practice Nursing or Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
- License to practice medicine in Washington, DC.
- 2 years of management experience managing other clinicians is strongly preferred.
- Spanish language fluency is preferred.
- 4 years of experience working in delivering sexual health care and in the HIV prevention and treatment space are required.
- 4 years of experience working with members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Expansive, Queer, Asexual, and Intersexed communities strongly preferred.
- Ability to provide culturally sensitive medical services to a diverse client population.
